Flying from BHX next week and will have an afternoon / evening to pass before flight early next morning. Any recommendations for somewhere decent to eat, within say 20 or 30 minutes, for a family, kids aged 8 and 12 but not fussy. Don't fancy Indian night before a long haul flight, not keen on chain restaurants. Do enjoy a good pub. Cheers,

If you have access to a car there are plenty of nice pubs reasonably close. I'd suggest the farm on monkspath or the orange tree in knowle (Google will bring up both). If you need to rely on public transport then the train into Birmingham is approx 15 mins from the airport. Plenty of non chain restaurants there. I'd recommend Bodega's for good well priced South American food, or buffalo and rye for BBQ type affair. Probably need to book for either. Also a very good polish restaurant for something a little different. The name escapes me but it'll be the first one that comes up on Google in the centre of Brum.

Original patty men is amazing for a burger, just around the corner from moor street station and a 10 minute walk from new street station. The pint shop and the head of steam serve reasonable cheaper food and great beers. Chung ying central does good dim sum and Chinese food. Bonehead does great chicken and beer, purnells bistro and gingers bar serves good food with cocktails (it’s Glyn purnells bistro and a lot cheaper than his Michelin star restaurant round the corner). Incidentally I have heard of deals to be had for 4 people to eat at the bistro on groupon. Opus is also a decent restaurant and a little more upmarket.

All of these are no more than a 5-10 minute walk from new street station which is about 10 minutes away on the train from the airport.

Edit to say I would go to purnells I think, then it’s a 1 minute walk to the pint shop and the wellington next door. Both are great pubs serving about 20 plus beers each. You also have purecraft just around the corner which I believe is run by purity.

We found the original patty man quite poor although we’ve only been once and it could have been a one off. I’d recommend The Meat Shack just behind the Hippodrome for a burger, been many times now and it really is very good.

The Orange Tree is a great pub. Not that cheap, but the food is top notch.

There are quite a few good pubs in that area between Solihull and Coventry/Leamington.

I'd add the Plough in Harborne. Great food and family friendly

For somewhere easy to get to from the airport, the Malt Shovel in Barston is decent.

Indian Brewery is a great place. Good beer, and the food is wicked. It's under neath Snow Hill station (although be advised that the entrance to the station shuts at 7:30pm).

Hen & Chickens is a nice place for a curry too, which is about 10 minutes walk from Indian Brewery.

My favourite place is called Syriana, which does Syrian and Lebanese food. Nice unassuming place and, unlike the majority of places in Birmingham these days, actually reasonably priced. I would definitely go there, you won't regret it.

As for beer, there's a few chain bars at Resorts World which is next to the airport. Plenty of shops, eateries, but they're chains. So you know what to expect from those places.

But do yourself a favour and go to Syriana.

As good as this place is, it's not really near to the airport.

The Boat Inn in Catherine-de-Barnes is a nice pub with good food and only about 5 minutes from the airport. I'd also recommend the Ye Olde Saracens Head in Balsall common about a 15 minute drive away.

Food wise, I'd go for the Indian Brewery or Indian Streatry (both similar but very good, beer at the first one is better mind)

In terms of quaffage, The Wellington and Post Office Vaults are well worth a visit for good beer, Old Joint Stock is good for pie as well as beer
