I fancied a pretty healthy chicken doner takeaway from a shop a bit out of the way.

They admittedly do a superb kebab. The place is near my parents East London/Essex. The highly miserable dystopian Ilford South..

I was there a few weeks ago and paid £4.90 for a (small) kebab which is the going rate in the area being circa a fiver.

I duly ordered my kebab last night and was asked to pay £6.50. I obviously thought there must be some mistake and said I wanted small not medium or large.

The girl said prices have increased and that she was sorry. I said this was well over a 30% increase! All other prices have gone up.

I can handle 5-10% however 33% is properly taking the pi$$ in my book. It's utterly outrageous in fact.

They might want to read up on the concept of the “Laffer curve”. If KFC et al pulled a stroke like that there would riots on the street!!!

I know the Government are statistical liers and that their figs are shall we say "embellished". I have noticed stuff going up in the UK but this was a real eye opener.

Pret prices are nudging up for instance. Oh well. I suppose we can blame Brexit or suchlike... I hope this is not a sign of things to come..

Look on the bright side, you are being prepared for hyper-inflation under a Corbyn government.

I’m in South East London (Bandit country); but I’d say that <$5 is reasonable for a small chicken Kebab. A Small is around £7 here, £10 for a large. A Chicken / Lamb shish combo is more like 15quid near me. Very good though.

If anyone is east of the city, I can highly recommend Uludag on the Kingsland road. Their large chicken shish (and chips) has been 9 quid for ages, and is a truly wondrous thing, well worth the journey.

Kingsland road used to be proper bandit country, but has become gentrified in the last few years, so is quite safe. All of the drug dealers have gone and been replaced by hipsters. I preferred the drug dealers, they were less annoying.

Being an old git.... (mid 50's) it's many years since I have had a kebab..... as many years that I have not been a young single bloke 'out on the lash', with similarly inebriated 'mates'. And when you remind yourself of the hygiene record of late night kebab, you'll know why...

kebabarrhoea n. medic. What one suffers from the morning after
kebable n. The incoherent mumblings used to order food after the pubs have closed
kebabbledash n. The semi-durable rendering compound found adorning the pavements and wall around the local 'dubious meat' emporium
kebabe n. The sort of woman who is looks incredibly tasty when pissed at 2am. But less so in the cold light of day.
kebab compass n.
1) Drunken navigation system (discarded lettuce etc) used to retrace one steps during his 'walk of shame'
2) The hand held device waved around by pissheads in an attempt to find their front door

abra-kebabra n. A magical illusion - performed after a night on the piss - whereby the typical Turkish delicacy is made to disappear down the performer's throat... before miraculously reappearing a short while later - down the back of a taxi driver's head.

You lot can stick your Laandan prices!

Festival Fish Bar in Cannock; run by Indians and they have a proper naan bread oven, so their Chicken Tikka Kebab in (real) naan bread is superb and only £6.05. They also do battered chips. Bostin'!

One of my more surreal travel experiences was walking through Akihabara in Tokyo, and a swarthy Turkish man yelled at me from his food booth "HEY, YOU ENGLISH, YES? I MAKE YOU NICE KEBAB LIKE AT HOME!"

Fair play to the guy for his targeted marketing approach.

A fiver is the going rate for a basic small donor in East London! Certainly in the near vicinity.

A 33% hike is simply not on! On principle I will be taking my custom elsewhere! I consider it a bit of a liberty to be honest. They are good but not that good to justify their price ramping.

Nearer to me, this place on Queensway charge £3.50 in a higher expensive area! Plus you can eat as much salad and sauce as you want if you sit in the back area.

This is my point..

My sister lives in Greece. One of life's (well my life anyway) truly great-but-simple pleasures is a giros and chips, washed down with a cold bottle of Mythos.

Dunno, I had to turn him down as I'd just had lunch at an Indian place the next street over!

Hipsters ruin perfectly good motorbikes as well.

Just checked Lamb Doner and chips from our local - 9:80. Wowzers. Starting to find reasons to vote for a Labour style price cap. Bigger disgrace than rail fares. Where's Corbyn and McDonnell on these matters of national importance; too busy making up sh*t on the NHS, I tell thee.
