Knife recommendations

Not sure of the names for them but I am after
- Cleaver
- Big sharp knife
- Bread knife
- A smaller sharp knife
Are there any brands I should be looking at in particular? I've been asked to buy Global a couple of times for my brother in law and his missus at a wedding and xmas but I would prefer to spend a bit less than this if possible as I hate spending money on this type of thing!

Any idea of budget? Do you want matching knives that look good on show or not fussed?
Do you want dishwasher safe or something you don't mind washing and drying by hand?
What knives have you already got and like the feel of?
Any specific use for cleaver?
How do you plan to keep them sharp? Sharpener and a steel or you want to play around with whetstones?
You are going to get endless suggestions and if you want to just browse... https://www.reddit.com/r/chefknives/

Take a look at ProCook. https://www.procook.co.uk/shop/knives-scissors
I purchased a set of the X30s, and have been very pleased. There are more expensive options if you're looking to spend more.
If you have a store near you then that's worth a visit. I've found them to be very helpful.

Thanks for the pro cook link, that looks like the kind of thing I want - the X50 knife block thing with knives for £100 is worth a punt for me!!
Regarding the cleaver - I use them for chopping up harder vegetables and cracking open coconuts. All my knives in the UK are ancient and have been hand me downs over years and years and hide in a Joseph chopping/knife block thing, in Sweden we just have the generic IKEA ones that many people have
I just fancy some new knives that are sharp and handle nicely. I appreciate that isn't much of a wish list and doesn't help much, so I'll take a look at that reddit link as browsing usually helps find things! As for dishwasher safe - don't care about that, I only use dishwasher for mugs, plates and the forks and knives from dinner, everything else gets handwashed.

I would go Victorinox. You would need to add a cleaver to this set but they do one.

Asking someone on here what knife to choose is like asking a driver what sports car to buy
I think the basics of a knife for any person are
1. How does it feel in the hand?
Weight?
Curvature of blade?
Handle grip.
It's all very subjective, like driving a car.
The only true knife fact is that people buy more knives than they actually need ...................
I'll say that again
The only true knife fact is that people buy more knives than they actually need ...................
Whatever knife to choose I would select a size rather than a make. My recommendation, a general cooks knife. Just one knife for everything, then after time if it is not cutting the mustard ( if a knife can cut mustard it is pretty good ).then get another more suited to your needs.
"What knife should I buy" is the equivalent of " What frying pan should I buy?"
You get the right knife and after that honeymoon period where you pump it up on FDR you then post
"What knife sharpener should I buy?"
It's going down the Alice in Wonderland rabbit hole.
Good luck with your quest.

Tony and his realism....Nice work !
To cut a long story short the original poster should select this if a male aged 20-35 with average sized hands who wants to do generic knife work

I bough the 5 piece and glass block set of x50 knives a year ago and I've been very happy with them. They are sharp, have a nice weight and they feel great in my hand. Although, I'm no expert in cooking/knives! I was just using a super cheap Wilko utility thing before and these are a huge upgrade for me.P.S. The procook stuff is always on offer/sale, or there is often a free santoku knife thrown in. So don't feel pressured to buy now!

While not suitable for which brand of knife to buy, this video I previously posted here may be of interest to you if you're still deciding what type of knife to buy.
Definitely try a few, so many people harp on about Global's but you may not like them.
I'm not a huge fan of the Japanese finesse style knives, i much prefer the German heavier blades with a bit of weight to them.
We sell a fair amount of knives from our showroom & find a lot of the pro's are going for Gusthav/Whustoff knives.
