I’ve started making my own after far too many disappointing frozen ones. Chop the spuds, parboil for a few mins before mixing them about in a bit of olive oil and seasoning and chuck them in the oven. Mix them about halfway through cooking and job done.

10 mins of prep time but a way better chip at the end of it
How does that differ from roast potatoes if you don't mind me asking! (apart from maybe size/shape!)

Good question

Erm they look like chips? laugh

They end up being crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I guess that is similar to a roast potato but just more chip shaped?

I was going to ask a similar question in so far as I par boil the spuds with skin on, let them cool a bit, then cut them in to wedges, add salt and pepper and maybe some jerk seasoning/celery salt, garlic, then put in roasting thingy coat in oil and cook in oven. I call them wedges but are some of you guys calling the same thing chips? smile

I'd rather go hungry than eat Albert Bartletts stuff. I worked there for a few shifts around 1999 and won't give them a penny if I can avoid it biggrin. The way they treat their staff was absolutely horrific.

I must admit i have been quite shocked at some of prices people are paying for oven chips. The Lidl Maris Piper chips that me and someone else mentioned on here are £2 for 1.5kg, those Alpine fries are £22 for 1.6kg yikes

I am not going to say that the best Lidl chips are the best oven chips in history but they are bloody tasty and award winning. To pay nearly 8 times more seems madness

I keep a few portions in the freezer if I buy a nice bit of ribeye or maybe some duck. Not to be eaten with fish fingers and beans.

If they're brilliant and you can afford it, fair enough. Mince at more than £10 a kilo seems a bit piss takey, though.

I have found most oven chips to be a disappointment. You always get a whole load of tiny end bits of the spuds, rather than nice big chunky chips ( as they claim to be). Lots of scraps ! i only ever have them on rare occasions ( low carb diet) so its a treat for me, but never lives up to my expectations. frown

Considering the amount of people on here who say getting an air-fryer is a must for oven chips/oven onion rings I thought this comparison review/testing video from americas test kitchen would be useful.

Lidl Maris Piper deluxe oven chips for me have been the best i have tried so far, and they agree(best potato product) :

https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/the-grocer-own-label-a...

"At £1.95 for 1.5kg, these chunky chips were “stunning value” said our panel of experts. “Well seasoned” with “great taste”, there was a “good contrast” between the “crispy” outside and “fluffy” inside. Shoppers loved the “upmarket” look of the packaging and the “excellent size” of the chips - which they said were better than those from some leading brands"
I mentioned these back in the thread. Couldn’t agree more.
Before anyone buys these, that review is for the chips from their previous supplier which were excellent.

Like a lot of branded stuff in the supermarkets, Lidl has changed their supplier but kept the same packaging.

Unfortunately the new supplier’s chips are crap as they have some sort of crispy coating on the outside.

The Aldi version are ok, although not quite as good as the old version Lidl.

I appreciate the convenience of oven chips, but your own are far superior from a taste and satisfaction point of view.

Peel and square off some large Maris Piper potatoes, the older the better within reason. Cut into thick slices and then into chunky chips.

Par boil until very tender, drain, allow to steam dry. *** At this point you could allow them to cool, toss in cold oil and then freeze ***

Oven at 180c. Heat a splash of olive oil in a large baking tray, and then toss in your chips, turn in the oil and space them out and then cook for 25 mins, tossing them regularly.

You wouldn't know they weren't deep fried sometimes.
