Looking for a new beer

I've recently spent around 3 months not drinking as part of a wider health kick. The closest thing I had to drinking was a few alcohol beers here and there as I'm not much of a soft drink person and a glass of water or cup of tea doesn't always cut it. I found out of the now extensive choice of alcohol free beers from Brewdog ales to Bavaria lager (that one is nasty) that Heineken alc free was actually quite a refreshing drink when nicely chilled along with Peroni.
The other week i thought bugger it I fancy a few beers as I had something to celebrate and I've released that my taste has massively changed. My previous beer of choice was either a hoppy or zesty IPA, or something like a Peroni or San Miguel if I fancied a lager, but they really aren't doing it for me, especially the IPAs and Ales.
I think I was drinking what I thought I liked rather than what I actually liked so I'm now on the hunt for a new beer of choice. I've release I like my beer nice and cold and like the sharpness of something with a decent fizz and a good amount of bitterness. Sweetness and maltiness is a no and anything that has anything added like citrus is out. I'm thinking I'm heading down the lager route, although in the past I've not been a fan of pilsners, especially becks but maybe I need to revisit.

Before committing to lager, I think it may be worth experimenting with a few more IPAs based on your previous tastes. They can have the qualities of lager but with a better aftertaste.
I got tired of excessive citrus in brewdog and most craft beers, but really like beaver town neck oil. It’s as refreshing as a lager.
Even more lagery is Duvel, a strong fizzy Belgian beer that tastes between lager and golden ale.
The above are premium, and when I’m in the mood for something cheaper I rate Shipyard IPA as light and refreshing.
If you’re sure about lager, I’ve never found anything to beat peroni. The Greek beer Keo is about as good.

A good quality pilsner, that is imported and brewed locally using quality pilsner malt is a good starting point. Budvar or Pilsner Urquell and good Czech examples that are easy to get hold of. Warsteiner is also easy to get hold of and is a pilsner that is brewed in Germany. Tesco sell Krombacher Pils which is imported but I am yet to try it. Zlaty Bazant Golden Pheasant is a Slovakian pilsner that is very good but a little harder to get hold of, if you have any Eastern European shops nearby then you can probably find it there.
We have a fantastic microbar here with 80+ bottled beers of every persuasion. Run by a really passionate chap who will listen to you and make recommendations. Worth seeking out somewhere similar and booking yourself in for a session? More to find a style than just a particular beer.
Don't go overboard, or you will end up having pleasant memories of that 7th bottle but having no idea what on earth it was.

Neck oil is great. I like Camden Pale Ale too but is slightly citrus OP might find. I got tired of excessive citrus in brewdog and most craft beers, but really like beaver town neck oil. It’s as refreshing as a lager.

Though OP based on what you said, what Grrbangs mentioned (problem is a lot of bitter beers do have citrusy hops) or Pilsners you would prefer- most German styles other than that are on the malty side.

)Going to look like a German beer snob here, but I don't like when people dismiss 'lager' out of hand, though I know they mean the crap mass market adjunct/european everyone knows as 'lager'. It is actually a whole world (or should I say mostly Germany/Czech) of styles, most of them eg. pilsners are actually pretty difficult to make well, and certainly far from tasteless. Pilsner, Helles, Dunkel/Tmavý, Schwarzbier, Bock, Doppelbock, Eisbock, Maibock, Marzen, Rauchbier, Dortmunder/Export, Kellerbier/Zwickelbier, Zoigl, Roggenbier, Dampfbier. (tbf good luck on those last three, beers of europe do have the original Dampfbier/steambeer in sometimes)

t for a while when I started again. I pushed through it though.I’ve been trying all sorts of weird and wonderful ales recently (lots of great Indy off licenses in Brighton), but when I just want a reliable refreshing beer I find a Punk hard to beat.

I'll hold my hand up and say I'm a massive beer nerd. I'm just back from two weeks in Germany and I think that's probably your prime location as has been said.
I'd add the German Weiss beers to the Pils and Helles for something different - Augustiner, Erdinger, Paulaner and Franziskaner are the ones you'll find most of. They've got some subtle banana and spicy things going on but taste a lot better than they sound.
I think the Polish Zywiec and Tyskie are really good quality lagers too - my go to for a hot day.

To be knobbish about it, a Helles is a separate beer style from a Pilsner. Main difference for me is the hop varietal (Hallertau vs. Saaz). But a fabulous beer none the less! I'm thirsty now...Fantastic German pilsner
