Hi UtH, I am by no means an expert as only on 2nd brew......
The greater good pinter website on Instructions page has a tips and tricks section. It recommends a slightly cooler fermentation stage and cooler conditioning. Personally I would give it a week for each. It also recommends using filtered bottled spring water for lagers.
One other tip, when moving the carbonation dial, do it slowly, otherwise it disturbs all the sediment. Good luck.
Thanks for the advice. I’m now wondering if I’ve got it in a room which is probably too warm then. Might move it as I’m only on day 2. After 8 days of brewing in a cool (ish) room, I have just moved it into the fridge for conditioning. It says leave in there for 2 days (but actually suggests anywhere up to 12 I think!) so I'll probably give it 4 days or so. It smelt pretty good when I took the end section of the barrel off.....certainly smelt like beer!

Does the tap plug in to keep the contents cold?
Or once it's taken out the fridge does it need to be drank that night?
From what I understand, it's simply the (annoying) case of just keeping it in the fridge if you want it to be cold, which lager, pilsner etc obviously you do. Or once it's taken out the fridge does it need to be drank that night?
That is a downside, as it takes up most of the fridge!
I have had my first pint!!
I think I ended up brewing for 8 days, conditioning for 8 days. The first pint or so that came out smelt pretty bad and had lots of 'bits' in it, I was a little concerned. But with that down the drain, this first proper pint is pretty good! If anything, it doesn't taste particularly flavoursome which I don't think is a bad thing, as I've heard most home brews can be really over powering.
Overall I'm pretty pleased and will definitely be brewing the lager next.

looks a bit cloudy, was it ok?
Indeed, it's not crystal clear, any ideas how I can get it clearer in the future? It's good though, already on my second pint! I can certainly see myself buying another keg and getting a bit of a production line going. Something rather satisfying about drinking my own beer.
Next time I'll give it a go with bottled water rather than tap, and maybe condition it a bit longer.

Public House ale. Brewed for longer than normal and conditioned for three weeks. I tried it at one week and two weeks but hadn’t cleared. Tastes good with no homebrew twang. I would be happy to be served it in a pub. I do think the Pinter recommended timings are a tad optimistic though..
I’ll be trying some of the Dark Matter stout and Four Saisons..

Little update
I'd not drunk any since last week so it had been sitting in the fridge. Just poured a pint and it has come out MUCH clearer than last week, and after one pint I can certainly feel the alcohol.
Is this likely because it keeps conditioning when in the fridge even though it has been tapped? Or has it just settled? I had driven the barrel in my car as I moved into my mate's house, so maybe the journey had disturbed it?
Either way I'm even more impressed with this pint; not quite perfect as the flavour still tastes a bit like a watered down Pilsner rather than one from a can, but it's still very encouraging.

Ok, lesson learnt, you must remember to shut the carbonation valve! I left it open for a couple of days and however much I have left has gone flat so will need chucking.
I'm hoping I got through most of it as I was rather enjoying it, so I'm a bit annoyed. Oh well, time to brew some more.
