Just got a couple of bottles of 17 year old Mortlach through the Wine Society. Not bad at all.

Nightmare getting hold of Rosebank. Distillery is closed so what's left is hat's left and it's getting harder to find and more expensive!

I drank it all. I bought a bottle of Almost There and it Almost Went in three weeks.
Have you tried Very Young and Still Young? 6 and 8 year bottlings prior to Almost There. Bloody mavellous.

Lefty Guns, good work!

I am a minor whisky enthusiast (has to fit round ny enthusiasm for beer, wine, port, brandy and tequila smile),

my personal fave is Pitty Vaich... you familiar with it?

Any others you'd recommend for a novice?

cheers

Indeed I am - third photo from left, top shelf... laugh

It often gets absolutely slated by the pros but I do enjoy it - it's maybe a bit one-dimensional but it's sweet and easy to drink. I think some casks got fked by sulphur candles which has ruined the reputation somewhat. My bottle's got no sign of sulphur thankfully.

Hmmm, you could try 12yo Cardhu or 15yo Dalwhinnie if you like Pittyvaich... Macallan 15yo Fine Oak is decent too.

Personally I love pretty much anything from Ardbeg or Highland Park (the 18yo HP in particular).

I want to start a good whisky collection but dont really know where to get some from.

I dont really want to stock my shelves with the normal 'tesco and asda' pap.

but something a bit different, anyone know of a good website or place to go for, not the run of the mill whiskey.

lefty. have you ever been to the isle of wight? there is [or maybe was, this was then i wer a bairn] pub called the white mouse which has hundreds of different whisky's lining the bar. it would definitely be right up your alley.

as for me, i was bought 4 bottles of whisky for christmas. they are gone now, as are the other half dozen or so i have bought since. i have as such decided to call 'time' on my drinking for the moment.

10 bottles since christmas? That is some serious drinking! Do you have beer and wine as well?

Not mine, but I went to a whisky bar while I was in Finland. A choice of over 360 single malts and some local ales. Not cheap, but a great place to drink and they really knew their stuff. I was on the Cardhu wink

Blimey! If you have a bad day you will not need to visit the off-license! I wish I liked Whisky but I jus can't get the taste for it. Perhaps if I bought a decent bottle it would be different?
Dalwhinnie 15 year-old is one I reccommend to non-whisky drinkers to convert them! Very, very smooth, beautiful sweet malt... Not dear either, maybe £30. Give it a go!
Dalwinnie, hurl Yeuk.

I usually start them on Springbank 21 (or 15 since the 21 is neary all drunk, need to find another decent priced bottle somewhere smile)

Very nice!

The roasted malt Balvenie is awesome. Good taste that man!

We've got about 10 bottles in common I think...

What's that on the right of the Tomintoul?

You haven't left much space for expansion! Rookie error... hehe

I made sure when building my library bookshelves there's plenty of space. There's about 60m of shelving!

12yo Cardhu? it's amazing stuff! I bet it was expensive! Never been to finland but I'm assuming it's like Norway - any imported booze is horrendous there. How about £12 for a glass of bog basic glenmorangie!

maybe 3-4 bottles of beer a week, but no wine until yesterday.

the first bottles were to help me not care about being newly single. then i got into a habit of watching a couple of dvd's per night with a fair few generous measures. then i decided to test which was best for a whisky mac - stones', tesco, or asda green ginger wine. on a half and half basis, this took 3 bottle alone [black bottle blended]. stones' by a mile imo.

i have stopped now smile

Thats a miniture bottle of penderryn, welsh whisky eek that someone bought me. In theory it should be relegated to the sideboard like the irish and japaneese but i bunged it in there to fill some space for now smile

As for space, that picture isnt very good to show depth (or the back row top shelf) - theres room for another row on each shelf assuming the glass shelves will take the weight....
