I heard there are 2 types of Sailor Jerry; the usual and one with lime or vanilla or something. Anyone tried the other or know if my mate was talking bks? I can't find anything about it.
The recipe changed earlier this year. Previously it had lime flavouring and lots of added sugar, now it is straight up spiced rum (cinnammon, cassia, vanilla).
Not only did they change the recipe, they changed it for the American recipe! Used to shift about 3 cases a week of the stuff from one of my sites in Bristol, now barely sell a bottle a week.

On the flip side, Morgan Spiced has boomed because of it.

Trick with Sailor Jerry is a quarter wedge of lime, softly squeezed into 50ml measure, and a dash of vanilla essence, brings the old days back! Or for the whole bottle, 2 x vanilla pods and about 2 weeks waiting.
I'm not surprised.

Tried the new stuff last weekend, not the same at all.

Thanks for the tip on the vanilla essence though thumbup

Stroh is awesome - I remember at the airport duty free in Austria the larger bottles have little symbols of an aircraft with a line through it - it is too strong to take on a plane! beerwobble

I remember my dad bringing a bottle of stroh home from a business trip when I was a kid. It was thrown down the sink after a year or so, but not before teaching my sister an invaluable lesson regarding sneaking drinks from the drinks cupboard!

if you like paint stripper, buy stroh!

Mount Gay is just the name of the manufacturer - there are several Mount Gay rums. The most widely available (and nastiest IMO) is Eclipse.

Mount Gay XO is the one you want. Very difficult to get hold of in the UK though. Selfridges stock it. Not many other places do. You'd have to order it on line.

I think you might be able to get Mount Gay XO in waitrose now. Mount Gay eclipse is the same distillery but a much younger rum. More of a mixing rum than the XO (understandable as the latter is quite a lot pricier!)

Don't go there,i barely remember a night, you know the usual in Ireland,a few pints of the black stuff followed by some nice claret, couple of Irish Coffees and then the Austrian in the crew feeling a little left out opens his contribution to the evening.........

Rumour has it that the first time I touched Stroh I almost drowned myself. It apparently included me heading out across the beach and out to sea to cool off because the bar was getting a bit warm.
redface

I say "rumour" because I remember sweet feck-all of that evening back in '96.
