I agree - Mount Gay is awesome
[url]Mount Gilbao|http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp?pf_id=1000000000266[/url] is made at the same location and tastes good
We met the boss at Rumfest last year, and had a nice taste too
Learnt about rum over three successive New Year's sailing holidays in the Virgin Islands and for me Mount Gay XO is head and shoulders above the rest. In the BVI it is about £10 for a litre bottle!
Over here is it about three times as much for a 75cl, however trick is to get it in Makro in bulk a couple of times a year.

If you want to push the boat out a bit try a bottle of Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserve (from Venezuela from memory...) - all on it's own, it's absolute nectar!
Absolutely delicious. Especially with a cigar as the sun goes down.reminded myself of this thread whilst pouring a drink just now, i need assistance and recommendation!
currently have in the cupboard:
myers's, which is used for mixing and does the job well being fairly weighty/dark.
appletons vx, used as a mixer for lighter appetites.
ron zacopa solera 23, which was twice the price of the myers's and half as good. do not buy.
pyrat xo - which is most odd. reminds me of a very weak stroh80 crossed with cointreau. bought it having read great reviews, but it isn't my bag at all.
prob. the nicest rum i've had to date is appletons 21yr old, but having just looked on the whiskey exchange i will wait until the next time i can but it at distillery prices [cost me about $30 iirc!].
i like a weighty rum and the taste of molasses/toffee, but smooth and rounded with it. too often i find the hgher priced stuff veering off towards cognac territory [nose wise, and flowery tasting]. tried gosling black seal and kraken in a bar the other week and thought both were poor [kraken managed to taste of the sea!].
can any afficianados point me towards a suitable drop? have got someone flying out to visit me on saturday so i need to put an order in.

they can be expensive, but El Dorado 12,15 and 21 are fantastic.
surprised you dont like Zacapa though, its decent stuff imho.
its just not very smooth, which is at odds with the price. el dorado 21 sounds good.surprised you dont like Zacapa though, its decent stuff imho.
PS - T84 - there's nowt wrong with lambs now and again. 50:50 rum and black was my student 'gettng pissed cheaply' drink of choice! you can still find the old recipe SJ at specialiset retailers, but it is pricey for what it is. buy tesco almond coke and mix with mount gay or appletons vx and a squeeze of lime - you WILL prefer it.
i found it to be really odd, like it was mixed with seawater. purely based on one encounter though, so take that as you will.
rum is a strange drink. with whisky i know what i like and have several 'go to' drams [usually smokey/peated malts] but i am yet to find the rum equivalent of lagavulin 16. it doesn't help given my location and the shoddy duty free selection viz malts. guess i need to take an empty bag when i go to curacao/grand bahama in jan!
ps - drinking ron zacopa with ice just now. needs to be fuller flavoured with more bottom end.

Hi guys, just new on here. Always scoured the forums but never posted until now.
I myself am a huge rum fan, Infact, I work for the biggest drinks company in the world-diageo. Some of our rums are the best there is but have massive appreciation for all rum.
Personal favourite (and it is widely regarded as the best rum In the world) Ron zacapa. Delighted so many people have sampled it. Also Ron zacapa XO but personal opinion the difference in price isn't worth it.
Another rum I'm liking right now is pampero anniversario.
Good to see so many folk sharing similar views.

Very true buddy. To be absolutely honest- if I didn't use my staff discount I would never have paid the money for them.
In terms on my drink of choice if I'm at my local it's usually Havana especial (not a diageo brand)
I do agree though...I think zacapa is £53 in tesco at the moment which is something I would never pay for a bottle.
Plenty of really great rums out there...just need to keep sampling!

My recipe for a Rum Punch.
I used to make it by the gallon each day to take to the beach for clients & guests.
1 ltr of dark rum (I use Cavalier from Antigua but Mount Gay is okay) never a spiced rum.
1 ltr of orange juice
1 ltr of pineapple juice
6 limes, juice of but chuck'em in the bowl anyway afterwards
A good slug of gomme or sugar syrop
Angustura bitters, loads of. Almost 1/4 of a small bottle.
Nutmeg grated fresh on top
That, chaps, is a bloody good tipple.
