I watched a review of a (very) expensive reverb / delay guitar effects pedal on the Anderton's 'tube channel last night and they were rattling on about Devin Townsend.

Some further investigation this evening revealed stuff like this:-

I rather like this; heavy, but musical (if you know what I mean). Very chord-driven with no shredding. A bit like The Smashing Pumpkins with no odd Corgan solos.
sleepmakeswaves who I linked to above are the support on his upcoming tour fyi.

Hmm, the wall of sound gets fatiguing after a while, but it is live and I found the studio version more musical. Will listen some more... Thanks.

Out of interest, what was the reverb/delay pedal? (I had and sold a BigSky a few months ago. It was phenomenal, sounded huge and majestic, but started to make everything sound the same. I'm sure there were subtler reverbs in there somewhere!)
Yeah, it is wall of sound stuff but I find the interesting chordal progressions combined with Townsend's alternating aggessive / softer vocals to be compelling.

Anyway.

The pedal in question was the Mooer Ocean Machine. It's a bit of fluff, for me. I'll stick with the old fashioned spring reverb in my amp.

I can recommend "Message In A Box" - a definitive collection of everything The Police released. 4 CDs in a 'book' box, very nicely presented. Includes a few tracks of early stuff that wasn't on the album releases too.

I bought it when I found out that my brother had got rid of my original Police vinyl albums when he'd cleared out the bedroom he inherited when I left home. Up until then I'd got by listening to the individual albums on tapes bought from Britannia Music Club mail order.

Right now though, I'm listening to They Might Be Giants...

Angel Vivaldi. I actually got hold of all his records and made it into one file so I have an endless stream of his rhythmic riffs.

Be Bop Deluxe: The BBC Archives.

Bloody marvellous. Not seeing them live back in the day is a real disappointment.

Saw them live a couple of weeks back. Great Aussie post-rock band more from the Russian Circles/p.g.lost mode than Mono.

Currently doing a session on 6 Music. Found by accident, and liking this new stuff - style is "Space-Porn-Prog" apparently! That's what I think she said anyway .....
