Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath, a near perfect intro for the band, rain thunder church bells then those threetwo sinister notes.
G and D flat

It is a majestic intro, though. Good call.

Well b@@@@r me, it is just two notes! This is probably why I am a bad guitarist rather than a decent musician. I actually had to get the guitar out and play the intro to confirm that the second note is simply G again but an octave higher, its the third note which is actually a different note.

Great selection of classic intros.

For me, there can only be one..... " Crazy Train ", from the lovable, cute Ozzy wink

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDZtbBZuqb0 ( special lyrics for the PH lads )

Truly mental at Max volume.

Fly People Fly by The Scorpions. Can still remember vividly the first time I heard it, aged 11!
Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix.
Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple
Alive by Pearl Jam
Mouldy Old Dough by Lieutenant Pigeon (any banger racing fan will agree..)

But really it has to be Gimme Shelter yes

On another thread someone mentioned a good stereo sound, this at the start would be a good candidate.

I've only recently discovered this guys work, and I - personally - love this intro:-

Deadhead by Devin Townsend

Quite difficult to play as well, as Devin uses open C tuning for his guitars.

Good thread with some good choices so far.

Ones that came to mind...

Then by The Charlatans
Love Spreads by The Stone Roses
Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack (someone got this one in before me)
Fade to Grey by Visage
Tainted Love by Soft Cell.
My kind of thing, but having read all six pages of this, I'm astonished to find not one mention of Little Wing. Absolute tour de force from Jimi.

In the classical world, forget Beethoven's Fifth this is one of the best intros:-

J.S. Bach's Toccata in Dm

Worth watching this ^ one, as it's one of the best I've heard.

I followed Greenie (and Kirwan) like no-one else in the late 60s until the acid got him and Kirwan (+alcohol).
Oh Well has not just a super intro, it's still a great record.
I agree with a lot of answers on here. There are so many great intros, a fortnight ago I would have put up a very long list.

After last Sunday (9th) Hyde Park concert I have been playing one band constantly, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

I just bloody love this record, always have since I first saw them live in 1980 - the intro is addictive.
Guitar playing has always been my love. The ending is f brilliant.
I could honestly play this forever and never, ever, tire of it!
Plus, they play it live almost better than the recordings.
