This is going back a bit, but it's a bloody good intro. One of those long, slow, tension build ups that demands something pretty stunning from the main section, and Handel does not disappoint.

To me, the opening notes to Jeff Wayne's version of War of The Worlds just about pip Beethoven's 5th.

I take it no one mentioned "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits because it's such an obvious one!

And in return, for the aesthetes amongst you; and you others and give it a chance if you think this sort of thing isn't for you:

On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - bassoons; and basset horns - like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly - high above it - an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I’d never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing a voice of God.

ta mate.

they all sit together, digitally nestled, on my iPod.

Classical music has just the same power to impress/move/delight as something by Elton John, Satriani, Charlotte Church or Metallica in my book.

Agreed. Try Child in Time by Deep Purple, can't post a link from this, but have enraptured Princess CH the younger with this one today, such skill!

If darreni had said what his link was, then I daresay miniman would simply have quoted it. Best to say what YouTube links are, as not everyone is in a good position to open them to find out.

U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name is also pretty good too.

...actually thinking about it, it's similar in construction to the Dire Straits one I posted in that the sound rises from almost nothing but blends seamlessly into the track.
Immense live! Heard it on every tour since Joshua Tree and it's still not got old.

Yes, I thought my post was very neutral. I realise many people can't access youtube at work.

I thought he could enjoy it, and noted we had already posted it.

I quite like blank youtube links sometimes, it's a nice surprise when you open it
