Killing Joke, Pandemonium - the differences in volume gets me every time!

Always liked the intro to Just Looking by The Stereophonics

Motorcycle Emptiness

And strangely, Chris Isaak, Wicked Game. Starting off on a bent note was a cool idea

Oh yes. Not much to beat when a tasty guitar riff is used. ZZ Top = masters of boogie.Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP2xcjtgcIc

As far as I'm concerned, they could have developed the intro for the remaining five minutes and omitted the song part entirely...
If you tolerate this, then your children will be next - Manic street preachers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX8szNPgrEs
Locomotive breath - Jethro Tull http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KR2H16Mr5g
Maid of Orleans - OMD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmwMhjbThKg
and despite the fact it's only about three bars, Jerusalem by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. No need for a yt link, I'm sure all PHers know it already.

The first intros I thought of all seem about a lifetime before most of the ones suggested on this thread. Part of the problem of reaching my advanced age, I suppose. But here are three.
Not the best, as such, not even much of a favourite, but for me the most celebrated introduction must be the single snare drum stroke that begins Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone. Instantly recognisable.
The greatest, and if it has been mentioned above apologies, has to be Chuck Berry's trademark guitar riff that opens so many of his songs. Johnny B Goode and Roll Over Beethoven would be good examples.
But my favourite. Well this is always a personal choice but The Beach Boys, God Only Knows is mine. The whole track is a marvel. There is hardly an instrument on it that is immediately recognisable, it is a totally imagined soundscape, counterpointing a beautiful song immaculately sung.

These two tracks (and the intros) from the Mission's latest album Another Fall From Grace have been entertaining me greatly lately.
After a longish gap, Wayne Hussey resurrected his 12 string guitar, and so we have the return of the jangles
Met Amor Phoses (if you get past the intro there's a Bowie tribute "there's a new black star in the heaven's tonight".

My favourite intros are all a bit predictable old school rock....
Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath, a near perfect intro for the band, rain thunder church bells then those three sinister notes.
Deep purples Speed king...... A really storming jam with guitar, Hammond and drums, that lead into a slightly disappointing song!
Got to agree on Floyd's shine on, a truly great slow build, real atmosphere. Great song too.
