I usually listen to 'Planet Rock' on my DAB radio - however, recently another cool rock station has started up called 'Teamrock.'

They play a much wider variety of stuff, compared to Planet Rock's tendancy to stick with more classic stuff.

Anyway, because of Teamrock, I have recently discovered 'Nightwish.'

They're kinda like Evanescense and Lacuna Coil - heavy rock guitar riffs combined with 'big sound' orchestral arrangements, and mostly with a female vocalist.

I like very much biggrin but looking at their website, it seems I am late to the party, as they've been around for ages - just not onto my own radar.

Anyone else like these?

Yep, listened to Nightwish for years!

If you like them look into Stream of Passion, Sonata Arctica, Delain, Apocalyptica and Within Temptation...

May I also suggest Theatre of Tragedy's album 'Aegis'. A recent discovery.

Splendid band - although I did find the last album a little disappointing. The current singer is much more of a standard female rock singer, while the original singer was very much an opera singer doing rock/metal and added a greater level of lunacy to the whole musical extravaganza!
Very much music of the "kitchen sink thrown in near the start" variety and that is no bad thing!!

They were better in the old days when they still had Tarja Turunen:

But some of their new music is really nice as well:

They have a new singer too following the Aneta period called Floor Jansen. Much more like to old Tarja era, though a bit of a scary looker IMHO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H0lz2KzzAw

The thing that got me into them was this concert - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_9nLUAPU2E

Also worth checking our Epica, though they sometimes ruin a decent song with one of the band grunting like a constipated frog...Each to their own http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VNj_HGwuFs

Nightwish are my favourite group smile

Went over to Helsinki in June to see them headline at the Tuska festival, was a fantastic day!

Can't help it

Every time I think of Nightwish I can see the misheard lyrics video to Fishmaster

Might be worth investigating Therion. Early albums were death metal, but they've since morphed into a full on orchestral / operatic approach. I find it a bit overblown in all honesty, but others might enjoy.

I love Nightwish.

Discovered them when listening to my mate's Resident Evil Soundtrack album. Nemo was the track on there so on the back of that, I bought the greatest hits album and have had everything since. Just bought Once the other day and love that too.

They brought out a dvd/blu-ray/cd before Christmas of a performance at Wacken last year. A definate 'must watch'

Check it out....... http://youtu.be/SjzPjjcvrQI

Epica are pretty good but I find the growling is sometimes a bit much and can spoil some of their songs.

Epica have toned down the growling more recently and upped the symphonic component of their sound. To be honest, at the moment, I think they're out-Nightwish-ing Nightwish!

Anyway, Nightwish's new female singer is Floor Jansen (ex-After Forever) who has a solo band by the name of ReVamp, who are going to be playing Bloodstock this year.

If you want to check out some of the more up-and-coming bands of that type, so you can have bragging rights when they crack the big time, I'd recommend you check out a South Yorkshire band by the name of Aonia. They recently got an excellent review on The Wyrd Ways Rock Show review page.

Quite partial to Nightwish. Can't remember which album I've got, but it's the one with Nemo on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO4LyKd-Hws

Another band worth checking out if you're into that sort of style is Within Temptation.

Bumping up this ancient thread as I recently fell into NIghtwish in a big way. There are 3 vids that I'm captivated by, the live performances are wonderful and I've become an instant Floor Jansen fan!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L21dXQMNOQs - Ghost Love Score live
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEzZRMthhXU - The Poet and the Pendulum live

And I know this is an older performance with Tarja but it's just as wonderful!

I can't wait for them to be back doing live shows (Seems I just missed a tour) as I'm going to have to go biggrin

Big fan of nightwish here. Found them last year and went and saw them at Wembley. Floor sounded even better in real life somehow.

My mate who booked me the tickets asked where I wanted to be. Between her legs was my answer...
