I would really like to own one, but head is ruling too much lol

I still think it looks great, but there's no denying it's getting dated now. On that note with 10 year old examples maybe rust, rear subframe problem, highly strung mainteance cost engine, quirky SMG with potential costs at this age.

i know some may think it's overrated, not that quick, dated, and expensive for what it is

however those who own them or have owned them generally say they love it, so i;ve seen many go back to one, as they are epic

your thoughts?

For me, all of the above.

It's a phenomenal car, especially considering the starting point, and the M3 badge is something of an icon. However, it's nowhere near as good as the fan-boys make out. The best cars are usually the most over-rated, and the M3 is no exception.

"Polarising" would be my response. In my personal opinion, it's right up there with the best cars I've ever driven in terms of performance, usability and driving enjoyment, but I totally understand why some people compare it unfavourably to older generations of the M3, or feel that it's overrated.

I think few cars do everything as well and I'd still love to have one. If someone offered me £10k for my B5 RS4 tomorrow, I'd probably take it and go buy an E46 M3, plus a cheap Volvo estate.

Once desirable but falling firmly into 'dhead' territory now.

I followed a new M4 this morning and thought it looked a little awkward.

For me, the biggest problem is the image.

Superb cars, superb performance. Find a good one and cherish it. Lots are being thrashed, bashed and abused which will make good 'uns desirable in year to come.

I hope only positive responses as I plan to be buying one in the new year.

Surely you'd rather negative responses as that will keep costs down!

They are nice all rounders. At just under 1600kg for a well optioned one, hardly flyweights though so not like driving an E30. The CSL is a whole different beast; that is the real icon in my opinion.

I'd love one, I don't give a monkeys about image, if you act like a wker then people will think of you as a wker, as for the opinion of people you don't know and will never meet you pass in traffic? Who really give a fk?

"Not really that fast" 0-60 in 4 something and 155mph is fast in my book, yes the newer ones are probably faster still, but I don't indent to enter races in it, so who cares - feel is more important than numbers to me.

I don't "follow the market" in them, but I guess now they're getting on, all the faults are well-known so you can either avoid them, or at least expect them - so it's a case of you can afford it or you can't - I remember when they were new the tyres were exceptionally expensive, but 18" wheels are run-of-the-mill these days so perhaps they're not so bad, ideally like any 10 year old car, I wouldn't ideally like to have it as my only way of getting to work etc - so if it breaks and I can't afford to fix it then and there, it can sit in the garage for a bit without my Kids starving.

It's a potential weekend car buy for me when I've got some spare cash. Feels like the next step up from my Mk5 Golf GTI

I think it is a great all round car and many owners always struggle to find a replacement for it so I think that speaks volumes, I am one of the few who doesn't like the way it sounds though it just sounds a little too "tinny" to me and it lacks a little depth in sound I think.

I used to have the same engine in my old Z4M and I know they do sound slightly different but the sound of that didn't blow me away either yet the S54`s noise is so highly regarded by most.

Brilliant cars.

My M135i is just as quick, but the rasp from the M3's exhaust. Oh my.

I'll have another when the 1er goes back i think.

a great responses

and it seems my feelings are mixed amongst others

however these cars aren't 0-60 in 4.x seconds
they're not slow, but in modern terms they aren't that quick. I know different type of car but the new merc a45 amg and golf r are sub 5 seconds on paper, and deliver probably less drama and character, but on the flip side cost less to fuel at double mpg and half the servicing cost i would imagine

agree with the above, there are some right rubbish ones out there

IMO they've managed to do wonders from the original base but very overrated.

Very good cars overall though, the image and reliability puts me off a bit but I'd still quite like one.

Agree they are not slow but the first time I drove a E46 M3 I thought it was a little flat in the mid range but as with most N/A engine M cars its all about 6k revs plus but if you have been used to a high capacity diesel or a petrol turbo the M3 can leave you a little underwhelmed.

The M3 most say anyway is that it isn't about the outright performance its about the package/chassis.

Doesn't feel very quick when you've driven faster metal and not yet classic territory so a bit meh from my point of view.

However considering what they're going for these days they're very good value considering what else is out there.

Good value now. Upgrade the brakes if you intend to enjoy a track day though. Engine feels unburstable though and very nicely balanced car.

Every few months i debate selling my e36 evo and getting one, but something always stops me. Mybe it's not different enough to warrant the change, maybe the horror stories make it seem like too much effort.

If i didnt have mine, i'd still look closely at them, but do so with my eyes open about further costs. They arent getting any younger.
