Call and response vocals, handclaps, Motown. It's distilled pop perfection and pisses all over club trop I'm afraid

I really didn't like what Michael Jackson became in his later years, am no fan of his, but as a piece of pop music, I don't think you can beat Billie Jean.
Loads of other close contenders, but as a kid growing up in the 80's, who still goes to 80's nights that is the one song I always hear, and think 'perfect pop song'.
Sadly I'm not allowed 'There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out' by The Smiths. Great, but not 'Pop'.

Late to the party here (unless I posted ages ago and can't remember, entirely possible!) but apropos having heard it again the other day, I have to nominate Sweet Freedom by Michael MacDonald.
It's VERY much of it's time but it's such a great song. Listen again if you haven't heard it for a while. I'd love to have 10% of the talent which can churn something like this out. The late, and great, Mr Temperton at his very finest.

'Just can't get enough' by Depeche Mode and many others by Vince Clarke.
I'm not a DM fan (I'll leave that to my friend, whom when we were in our late teens decided to pop over to my house with an armful of DM albums, then proceeded to play them in succession whilst sitting down and nodding in a corner! Over 3 hours of my life that I'll never get back. But I digress ..), however DM's songwriting and sound matured almost as soon as Vince Clarke left the band in '81. Martin Gore was so much better e.g. 'Everything Counts'.VC's best output is with Alison Moyet in Yazoo 'Upstairs at Eric's' - which could have easily made this thread, 'Don't Go' or 'Situation' (the latter would be my stripping song of choice if I frequented such places).
Back to the subject, v.hard to disagree with a number of choices e.g. 'Club Tropicana', or ABBA. That said, it's either:
- 'Billie Jean' - MJ
- 'Groove is in the Heart' - Dee-lite
Now if you want to talk sub-genres and discuss synth-pop ...

Contenders:
Hanson - Mmmbop.
Jessie J - Price Tag
David Gray - Babylon
The Offspring - Pretty Fly For a White Guy
Really?Hanson - Mmmbop.
Jessie J - Price Tag
David Gray - Babylon
The Offspring - Pretty Fly For a White Guy
Even compared with the two immediately above all of them would be bombed out.
Teenage Dirtbag is good but of it's time. I think to be considered a GOAT the song has to bridge eras and ages. Billie Jean does that. The Offspring though? That wasn't even the best record that month.
This may have been mentioned before but back in 69 when this shot out the radio it was like a breath of fresh air for pop music!
