Buying a Telecaster advice
Discussion
I've been playing since last December and currently have a Squier Strat and a Mexican Fender Strat, both of which I really like, unfortunately for my wallet I really want to get a Telecaster to go with them now too!.
The problem is I'm trying to find a specific one, I really want sunburst with a white pick guard and a maple neck but when I've looked at a Mexican Tele in a guitar shop the maple neck looked awful, it looked really shiny even compared to the maple on my Strat(which is from 2005 I believe) have they changed the finish on them?, are there any options to get one with the darker/more worn finish other than buying one from the 60s .

newer maple necks are a bit plasticky for my taste. the neck on my 90s squier is nicer than on my baja tele. Its nothing a little wire wool wont fix but doing that does affect re-sale a bit...
why not build your own? Tele wiring is easy and if you're looking for a specific look/feel its often easier, cheaper and better to self build?

Maple that is exposed to light, especially light containing UV, will darken eventually. Shine can be taken off with a suitably graded abrasive, 240 (or higher) wet and dry will work, though a flexible abrasive such as Scotchbrite would be easier to use. If you choose to do this make sure never to rub abrasive across a fretboard, only along it.
Have you looked at second hand options, might be easier in the long run, and if you can get where the woodwork colours are to your taste the scratchplates are very easy to change.

I'm not really a strat fan but for a brief period I had a Strat
affinity series guitar, felt really good, was quite surprised, and after a quick look they do affinity squire teles in colour spec you want.
Just seemed far better quality than normal old Squires to me.
The Affinity is the cheapest of the Squier range a mate has one and out of the box it's a surprisingly good weapon, the Classic Vibe series is much closer to the Fender line though in terms of quality and dimensions ( the Affinity Tele has a thinner body )affinity series guitar, felt really good, was quite surprised, and after a quick look they do affinity squire teles in colour spec you want.

I have a Classic Vibe Thinline Tele and love it to bits - it's a superb instrument. They do a Tele in sunburst with a maple neck (albeit with a rosewood fingerboard, though) which may be worth a look?audidoody said:
Acquired taste I should think, not one I've acquired yet.Walter Sobchak said:
Just looking at them on eBay now, I think a decent second had road worn model would be perfect.
