As part of the Softs his playing on Bundles is still a regular for my ears.

I saw the sad news announced by his daughter last night on Facebook. He was a hugely talented player who practically wrote his own language of otherworldly harmonic structure. He was responsible for a massive leap in our understanding of jazz as he got his inspiration from bebop horn players, but then proceeded to make wild, sci-fi-esque soundscapes from his take on jazz language.

One of the greatest guitar players ever. Eddie van Halen says so.
Original UK album is the blueprint for every "supergroup" album since.

Equally embarrased to say I only learned of this a couple of weeks ago.

Saw him on many occassions, Soft Machine in late 70's, and more recently at The Cluny in Newcastle with the amazing Chad Wackerman on drums.

Totally unique, supremely talented and seemingly a genuinely nice bloke who loved his beer!
