I listened to Dark Side of the Moon while driving home from London yesterday. That album takes a lot of beating.
Before I see your answer I thought it's gonna be Straight Shooter or Desolation Angels with your name.
I didn't 'Feel Like Making Love' at the time. biggrin

Whilst not being my personal "Best Ever" it does tick the boxes in terms of "universal appeal" IMHO.
Sound quality is second to none.
Quality musicians.
Steve Gadd
Michael McDonald
Victor Feldman
Jeff Porcaro
Tom Scott
etc...

Not forgetting a beautiful collection of perfectly crafted songs, of course.

You could probably add Graceland by Paul Simon to this thread.

Some truly excellent tracks and nothing to upset the sensitive of ear.

It is, actually, one of my favourite albums of all time, but that's not why I've included it smile

Using OP's test, it'd be Led Zep IV

Really sorry, I seem to keep posting the same answer on these sorts of threads but for me it has to be Tears For Fears Songs from the big chair.

I've tried quite a few albums off this list and a few things have become clear; we all have different tastes and the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are a boat I completely missed despite only being a couple of years younger than most their die hard fans.

Actually, that Tears for Fears album is a brilliant choice!

Nah, mate, it's a bear pit the music game. Full of crooks, I'm glad I'm out of it.

Love all of those, but Diamond Dogs is the one that I keep coming back to.

No love for This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours, by the Manics?

Love the Manics but the Holy Bible is their best imho

Ah, I think their best selling but nowhere near their best - I'd probably rank it somewhere just below the middle if I ranked their albums.

Some superb suggestions above.

One of these could make my choice - along with 100's of others.

Saw them play this live on the 20th anniv tour, even they apologized for it and said 'don't worry, we're nearly done'....

Having said that

Just a reminder that "best album ever" is not the same thing as "my favourite album ever"...

remind away, but who made you the arbiter of what constitutes the best album ever (oh, no-one )...This thread was always going to be subjective.

Always thought Blue Jeans & Chemical World were the best songs on that album, followed by For Tomorrow.

I'm not a massive fan of Clapton, but 461 Ocean Boulevard still sounds great & works really well.

I've listened to The Suburbs by Arcade Fire for days on end. That's a great modern 'concept' album.

Spook, Just spent this week working out the twiddly bits of Chemical world & it's left me reinforcing the idea that Graham Coxon is one of the great guitarists we've produced. Not the greatest for me, but it's definitely up there. His solo stuff lacks the tunes largely & so I'm not sure they're one of those bands where the sum of the parts exceeds the whole but it's a great record nonetheless.
