I saw them re-tour this last year, one of the best gigs I can remember seeing, so much better than 1st time around due to Shawns much reduced chemical intake.

Yesterday I decided to select a few tracks to play from this album and being unable to pick a few favourites ended up playing them all except for Stairway To Heaven as this track bores me to tears, it is a shame that Stairway was included on this album as it definitely goes against the grain, nevertheless this album is pure genius and never ages, it has everything
You've gone right down in my estimations. I quite liked you as a fan of The Tubes, but shocked that you actually like this dirge!
You're right that Stairway is crap, but it isn't out of place at all. It's all pretentious cobblers.

Wow! That was weird

"I don't like it" is obviously a valid statement, but it's the tenth best selling album ever. Most sampled piece of music ever. One of the most influential albums ever as opined by many musos and journos alike (though they tend to also reference Pet Sounds so what do they know, the pseudy bds?)... don't want to go on and sound like.. well, like a PHer... but

"pretentious"... yes. "Cobblers"... don't think we can allow that one*

*although Stairway is by any measurement or value system, utter st

I seem to remember you think Withnail is crap as well Twig, which renders your judgement on anything suspect to say the least

Good call, but I'd go with Virgin Suicides over the first album.

TwigtheWonderkid I am shocked from your outburst, I will not allow myself to go down the same route that you have chosen to take

Handbags away please, this is the Music sub-forum not the Lounge. You know the saying: Never argue with idiots, they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I don't think this has been mentioned (and if it has, I'm saying it again) Roxy Music's Avalon is almost the definitive 1980s dinner party album, especially for warm summer evenings. So much so that it became a cliché. For full effect it has to be on vinyl, not for any particular audio reasons, just because it suits the general 70s/80s vibe. And because of the album sleeve. Not one of my favourite albums in total, there are too many average tracks in it for that, but for the original criteria, it's pretty darn good.

Avalon

The first one from Black Grape is a work of overlooked genius, better than anything The Mondays did. Saw The Grape twice.

New album on the way.

I'd find it hard to choose between Electric Ladyland, Wheels of Fire, Unknown Pleasures and Ok Computer.

Giving STH stick is a bit harsh, it's a victim of it's own success, I'm guessing most people loved it when they first heard it, I know I did back in the 70s but it's one of those tracks that has been played a bit too much over the years. When you get a track in a similar vein that hasn't been played to death it still works Child In Time by Deep Purple comes to mind.

STH does reek somewhat of cheese as the lyrics are genuinely awful. I seem to remember an interview with Robert Plant where he stated that, during rehearsals for a gig, they would always play it in reggae style. Nevertheless, I've always thought it was - musically - a well crafted tune. I certainly enjoy playing it on the guitar (though not in music shops, I might add.......).

WRT Child In Time, the studio guitar solo is IMVHO one of the best ever committed to vinyl or any other medium one cares to mention. A truly epic guitar solo.

It's been a long time since I've seen two posts on PH I agree with. Both vocals deserve huge admiration as well.

Don't they just?

Of the two tracks in question, I think Gillan just edges it for me.

I think my favourite Plant vocal is "Ramble On". He perfectly captures the "essence" of the song on that.

Your comments are much appreciated and I fully understand what you mean about STH being played to death. I am not the sort to be influenced by media hype, when playing LZ IV for the first time I didn't like STH and it did seem out of place to me, to this day I have never enjoyed listening to STH so never will, I really do cringe when hearing STH

Child In Time is pure class and no matter how many times I have played it I can play it again and again and again and thoroughly enjoy it
Perhaps it is just me but STH is bad real bad
