Hard to argue against Rumours.
Dire Straits Making Movies is a good listen still
Good shout.Dire Straits Making Movies is a good listen still
The Power Station Studios(now called Avatar Studios) around that 79/80 time, all those great Chic records + the album We Are Family by Sister Sledge + The River by Springsteen + Making Movies. You could say the Power Station was on a roll. All recorded through their Neve 8068.
It's a broad church, the subject of "Best Album Ever". Is it your personal best for personal reasons? Is it the best for song quality? The best for production? Popularity / longevity / musicianship? The criteria is surely endless.
Ones that spring to mind that are "important":-
Floyd : DSOM
Miles Davis : Kind of Blue
The Beatles : Sgt Pepper
Metallica : Master of Puppets
Guns 'n Roses : Appetite for Destruction
AC/DC : Back in Black
The Jimi Hendrix Experience : Are You Experienced
The Stones : Exile On Main Street
MJ : Thriller
Fleetwood Mac : Rumours
Black Sabbath : Paranoid
Sex Pistols : Never Mind The bks
Oasis : What's the Story
Prodigy : The Fat of the Land
The Who : Who's Next
For clarity, I have just two of the above albums (DSOM and Paranoid). I just think it's a list of albums that IMVHO either changed the game a little or were personal triumphs that will stand the test of time.

I couldn't care less about friend's varying taste, if they're in my house it's my choice. But I don't really do albums, so my standard go to would be The Prodigy - Experience.
It's either that or 180bpm gabber mixed with no breaks. They'll thank me for The Prodigy in the end.
In reality I'd stick a Spotify playlist on which covers a multitude of bland ste. But nothing so bland as Dire fking Straits.

Heaven or Las Vegas - The Cocteau Twins.
Beatsongs - The Blue Aeroplanes.
Dog Man Star - Suede.
Couldn't decide between those three, Blue Aeroplanes probably wins by a nose. There are songs by other artists/bands that I like more but as a 45 minute piece of music each of these are great, in my opinion obviously.

The Holy Bible by the Manics. Definite crowd pleaser
Definitely up there. Apparently "completely unsuitable" for a Christmas drinks party though according to my wife.As an aside, I find the Manics a fascinating band. On the one hand, one of the worst bass players I've ever heard, who's spent a career wearing dresses, sunglasses indoors & slavishly following the chord pattern with at best roots & fifths and on the other, JDB who is a top notch guitarist. Altered tunings, partial chords, searing lead chops, he's got the lot. Name me one other pop song that has a passing Eb7m chord, because I can't think of one.
And that's before you get into the lyrical side & attitude of it all. Love the Manics, me.
In terms of a Best Album Ever, I'd have to go by the following rules:
- Must be by an artist who is clearly defined by most as one of the all-time greats, and had a meaningful and lasting contribution to music
- The album itself must be considered historically important within the context of that artist (for whatever reason)
- And most importantly, it must be an album I actually like
Given those definitions, I'm going to plump for Nirvana's 'In Utero'. Never as popular as Nevermind, but it has a depth far beyond the predecessor. Short but punchy, lyrics that define a generation as much as the individual that wrote them, and an overall sound that has never been replicated. For me, it's musical perfection that covers all moments in a lifetime, from the peaceful to the angry to the melancholy.
That said, the OP asked for an album that you'd put on for guests to cater to everyone, so I'd actually go for Oasis with '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' instead. Just as important, arguably more basic in construction but I'll be damned if I've yet to meet someone who doesn't own it.
