I've very recently upgraded my speakers. I was eagerly looking forward to listening to some really nice sounding music but after a week I was beginning to feel a little let down, not by the equipment (although it could be a lot better) but by music in general, nothing seems to love up to my expectations.

Well that was until Youtube threw this into a mix.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EO1nfSCKrU&in...

This was a real oddity for me, not that I don't like this sort of music but I just love the sound of it. The next song was The Animals, House of the rising sun. That sounded quite nice too.

So come on, help me out with some fantastic sounding tracks to enjoy my new speakers with. I'll listen to almost anything jazz, classical, rock, I love music of any kind so long as it's good quality.

Here's a suggestion that's a little different:-

It's dominated by Darrell's guitar work, and he unusually insisted on using Randall solid state amps which give a very "gated" and crisp sound. It works really well with the disciplined (and very heavy) drum work of Vinnie. To my ears, the production is crystal clear as well.

Fab songs but (imho) horrible production and sound -- tinny guitars, no bass, nasty drums!

Classic "I've bought new shiny things" test tracks:
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Faithless - We Come One (the proper version, not the short cack one)
Aim - Cold Water music

New gold dream (the album) by simple minds is a great sounding album, good production.

Stars by simply red used to be my demo album, not a huge fan of the band, but a great mix.

Thanks chaps, I'm working through them.

So far: Steely Dan, why have I never listened to them before? The production is stunning.

ELO, had the album for years, great sound with all the violins.

Some Gump, I spent a couple of minutes searching for "I've got new shiny things" lol. Faithless is quite good, heard it before many times but it is still good. I've heard AIm before but can't remember where, like it.

Biggest problem I have is my wife isn't into music in the same way I am so when I put a tune on just for the sake of it's sound she turns her nose up. She really didn't get Steely Dan.

The Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin Sounds amazing on headphones. I would imagine it sounds pretty good on a decent sound system.
If you like The Byrds type jangly rock/pop, then a modern version with really high production values would be Teenage Fanclub's Grand Prix.

Oh yeah, "Sparky's Dream" is fantastic - also "I Need Direction", which I think was on a later album.

For great sound on new speakers I'd try Massive Attack's Mezzanine album. It's dark and it sounds great. Teardrop is of course the most well known track.

Well I've listened to quite a lot of music over the past few days and I've had an accident which has led to a revelation.

Whilst moving my speakers onto the newly laid mezzanine floor I decided it was time to bi-wire them, all the cables in place I started to connect them up to the Denon AVR3802, somehow a live speaker wire shorted to the chassis. I now have a dead Denon. However this is probably the best thing to have happened to my sound system in the last 8-10 years. I've had to revert to my old Yamaha AV amp, it blows the doors off the Denon, I've always felt the Denon was muffled and whilst it did a good job of pointing sounds to parts of the room it never created a sound field I was happy with. Now the Yamaha is back in for a while everything sounds as good as it once did.

So now I'm looking for a relatively cheap AV amp with optical and HDMI inputs but in the mean time here is a tune I've been listening to very loud today.

Thread deflection
Doesn't the Denon have a bank of internal glass type fuses ? Just in case its something as simple as that
And when you get your replacement make sure you hear it first There might plausibly be other possibilities such as an optical to audio converter or such like
Not much help I know I just find that some old Audio gear is really superb sounding

Obviously anything by the Dan or Fagen's solo albums but also back in the day a good demo album use to be Sheffield Steel by Joe Cocker and also Famous Blue Raincoat Songs by Jennifer Warnes.

I was never a big fan of hers but Will You? by Hazel O'Connor with that heart-wrenchingly beautiful sax solo by Wesley Magoogan is a must.

Koko by Goldfrapp is a great track to listen to loud through great speakers, but YouTube or MP3s/AAC/etc. won't really do it justice. You really need a WAV, a CD or better still, vinyl.
