As usual, my memories seem to go back to the medieval period, but I can remember going to the Marquee one night back in the sixties and the supporting band consisted of
Jeff Beck on guitar, Ronnie Woods on bass, Mickey Waller on drums and Rod Stewart on vocals. I think back in those days supporting bands at the Marquee got fifteen quid a night. They were rather good.

In 1975 I saw Queen play at the Bingley Hall in Stafford (which was and still is an agricultural show ground). They had by that time moderate chart success with Seven Seas Of Rye and then Killer Queen but this concert was just as they released Bohemian Rhapsody which catapulted them into superstardom.

Just thought of another one.

I was playing in a band one night in 1968 at Bangor in north Wales, supporting Joe Cocker. They performed Little Help From My Friends. It was the same week it hit number one on the charts. It was electrifying. One of the greatest musical experiences of my life, on a par with seeing Hendrix at the Uppercut club in Forest Gate in December 1966.

I saw Kaiser Chiefs before they were Kaiser Chiefs (Parva). Thought they were alright - less irritating than the Chiefs!

I saw Snow Patrol somewhere around the time of their second album. They got a bit of attention then but it exploded after their third album.

There are various bands I've seen as support before they made it, but none of real note I don't think.

1968, walking up Bournemouth front just past the pier, up the slope to find out what this incredible sound was.
Couldn't get in, no need, could hear as clear as a bell. Ok not the band's first appearance but very nearly. The band has changed over the years to become probably the most famous in the world, with two Mick and John remaining since the beginning.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

Another, not from the beginning (be a bit difficult as they're American), but saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on their first ever tour here in March 1980. I didn't even pay! I was working at Oxford Poly at the time and their college gigs were great - I'd always help out if the band was one I liked.

There is still the film of them playing Refugee at the Poly on YouTube if it's not been taken down. Just search Tom Petty Rock Goes to College Refugee

And tomorrow Sunday they're on at Hyde Park (with a connection to F. Mac, ie Stevie Nicks is guest). Couldn't get much better for me!

Not quite the same as we didn't get to see them play but 1983 went to the Queensway Hall Dunstable to see a band called Metallica, The Rods were on as well.
Arrived to find it cancelled due to lack of ticket sales.

I saw Radiohead in a pub in Blackburn when I was barely out of short pants, must have been less than 50 people in there, ran to reidys the next day and bought "Drill" EP on CD, 6 months later they'd got that jeans commercial and released Pablo Honey, I sold said CD to buy an eighth I think a fee months later, its probably worth a mu t now, I daren't find out how much.
My friend was at school with Radiohead, he said they formed in school and played as the school band. hehe

Motorhead in 1975 at the Roundhouse. They were ear splittingly loud, dreadful and yet completely fantastic at the same time. Been a devout fan ever since. (R.I.P. Lem')

Myself and some friends say Mudhoney just after their first EP came out at in the backroom of some rough old pub in Digbeth, Brum.
Aged sixteen and pretty much the only people there it was quite a night.
That didn't happen to be the Rainbow?
I think it was the Barrel Organ, but I could be wrong.

Saw Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in 1979 and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at Poole Arts Centre in 1995. So was there at the beginning and at the end.
Knebworth was virtually the end for Led Zeppelin, other than a few European gigs shortly after, just before Bonzo died.

I saw them at Earls Court in 1975 and both Knebworths, 4th & 11th of August 1979.

I think that may be the case, however Dave Hill defied pigeonholing!

Yeah, still does. Total one off, he couldn't have been anything other than a pop star.

I saw Arcade Fire at Electic Picnic in Ireland probably 10 years ago, it was a small sweaty tent.

On Wednesday I saw them at a smaller venue, York Hall. Now that was a bit surreal.

I saw U2 back in 1981 at Nene College in Northampton, just a couple of hundred people, but we knew they were something special.

I saw Arctic Monkeys in a few pubs around Sheffield before they were getting radio play. I knew pretty quick they were going to make it big and told the lead singer so when bumping into him at a Leadmill club night. He thanked me but seemed to have already realised the same himself.

Also saw The Killers supporting Stellastarr at the Fez Club in Sheffield with I guess 100 people there, probably around 2004. Both were excellent.

Plus numerous bands at the uni indie night, sadly missed, Fuzz Club. The Coral, Zutons, Biffy Clyro, Bloc Party, etc. Good times!

Slightly off topic, But i saw Aerosmith a few weeks ago at download.

Im not quite old enough to have seen the 70's! , and i would unlikely to have paid to see them at a dedicated gig.

However i was absolutely amazed at the standard they played a 2 hour gig at, at their age!!

To be able to still do it in your 60's is really rather remarkable. And shows the years of drug abuse can't of done that much harm hehe

They all looked like they should be in a OAP home!!
