Gig Plans - 2018
Discussion
It dawned on me the other day that since getting into the guitar I’ve been to almost no gigs, so have made it my new year thing to get out and see more music.
Got tickets for Aynsley Lister in Winchester in a couple of weeks and then The Fratellis - who I meant to go and see ten years ago and never did! - in March.

I went to a signing (I didn't bother to wait for that) and live performance by Joan Wasser (Joan as Policewoman) at Rough Trade East last night.
She performed about 2/3rds of her new album live (with just a keyboard and guitar) and, frankly, blew me away.
I'm new to her, having discovered her material via a video for the recent "Warning Bell" (I'd heard of her before, but was kind of put off by her association with Anthony and the Johnsons, who I'd not liked much), but she was excellent in front of the tiny audience.
It was great value too, as you got in for the cost of the album or CD which you bought!
The queue for the signing was long, long, long and I had a way to go (I'm not really bothered about signed CDs to be honest) to get home, but she was excellent, great voice, even if she does look rather like Noel Fielding in a couple of the photos I took! (Unrepresentatively, I would add!)

Last Gig:
Despised Icon's supported by Malevolence, Archspire, and Vulvodynia.
Went because I really really wanted to See Archspire and didn't mind seeing Despised Icon. I knew nothing about Vulvodynia, now I know they are from South Africa and death/deathcore, watch this and you'll know as much as I do about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei2uvoF0o4U. Wouldn't go out of my way to watch them again.
Archspire were everything I hoped for, great set even if it was only ~30 minutes.
Malevolence, knew nothing about them before I went but they seem like a metalcore hybrid between Pantera and Hatebread. Overabundance of that Pantera fast section, slow section with heavy bass and Anselmo trade mark vocal, then another fast section. A lot of fun live and the crowd went predictably nuts as you'd expect for anybody who can successfully combine Pantera and Hatebread. Will be making the effort to see them at Download even if I don't think I will be listening to their albums much in the intervening period.
Despised Icon, big chunk of songs from Beast, which I wanted. Nothing new to convert people that never liked them but as with Malevolence they are great fun live if you can let go.
Mama Roux, never been before despite it being just round the corner from the Institute. Decent sound system. They have a small upstairs area if you want to avoid the chaos downstairs. Oh and they allowed stage diving, can't remember the last time I saw proper stage diving at a larger venue in Brum.
Next gig:
Front Bottoms for my daughter @ Rock City Notts on Saturday, not looking forward to this one at all
Paradise Lost @ Rescue Rooms Notts on Sunday, really looking forward to this one as I really enjoyed the last album

Agreed, the album launch gigs at Rough Trade are excellent. I've been to a few over the last couple of years (Teenage Fanclub, British Sea Power and The Go! Team plus a few less well known acts) and they've all been great. I've never hung around for the signing either. Usually a 40 minute gig including a mostly songs from the new album plus a couple of old favourites in a tiny venue makes for a great do.She performed about 2/3rds of her new album live (with just a keyboard and guitar) and, frankly, blew me away.

If I'd known about Joan As PW I might have gone to that too.
Not surprised, she seems a tad miffed at Billy. https://pitchfork.com/news/darcy-wretzky-fires-bac...
Picked up tickets for Garbage for September @ Rock City. Always love watching Shirley perform.
