I'm not sure I'm going to explain this very well, but which rockers would you regard as good singers? At their prime obviously and not just those that could put a song across e.g. Rod Stewart, I'm thinking of Rob Halford, Meat Loaf, Roger Daltrey, Freddie Mercury.
I'm sure there are musos on here who will know more about the subject than I do, will argue with my list and ask me to explain but to me it's as simple as that. No one, for instance, would say Bing Crosby was a great singer but he , like Rod Stewart, could get people listening while not having the range of some on my list.

Not sure what you mean but gonna try and list some examples I believe are really good -

Corey Taylor - Stone Sour/Slipknot lead singer. His range from clean to shouting is amazing. Listen to some Stone Sour and then Slipknot, you would think they were two different people.

Lzzy Hale - Very talented from woman from Halestorm

Oli Sykes - he gets a bit of hate for how he acts but no denying the guy has a great vocal range.

Jonathan Davis - recent solo album was really good and very different from KoRn

I hope I have understood you correctly...

Corey has a stunning range, altho Im not to keen on the full on ragey stuff.

Myles Kennedy I like.

For Rock Pomp, then Freddy was hard to beat.

I always liked Rob Halford in Unleashed in the East and Killing Machine albums.

Theres loads of good singers around, YMMV

I've always been a huge Who fan, so Roger Daltrey is my personal fave.

John Fogerty of CCR takes some beating too.

Soundgarden have been on my playlists for years & Chris Cornell really could sing anything beautifully:

So talented, so sad.

Brent Smith from Shinedown. Here he is doing an acoustic of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man.

Got to be a mention somewhere for Devin Townsend. Similar in some respects to Corey Taylor with a super heavy group (Strapping Young Lad) and more melodic solo work.

Years ago I was listening to a quiz on commercial radio. When the young lady contestant introduced herself she said 'I hope you won't ask me any questions on that awful pop music'.

The presenter asked her'who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974?" Of course she had no answer. He said ' next time don't be so pompous'.
Why the fk are you looking at this you pillock?

Definitely right up there with the legends, fantastic live too, not just a product of a clever studio like some.

I'm going to throw in Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer), Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria) and Ralph Michael Saenz / Michael Starr (Steel Panther) but appreciate they might not meet with approval from all.

Corey Taylor, Bruce Dickinson, Freddie Mercury are a given although I suspect "good" probably get influenced by a preference to a particular group as much as it does the technical prowess of the vocalist. Serj Tankian for example, I think he's a great vocalist but others dislike his style(s). I also agree with the earlier poster on Jonathan Davis.

There are many others in much smaller bands that deserve more recognition in a world of over produced, off the shelf, pop horror.

Peter Gabriel is more versatile than you m might expect.

His version of Summertime on the Glory of Gershwin album opened my eyes.

I also think David Draiman has a pretty good voice when he tries

Agreed, Peter Gabriel is a great singer.

Some slightly left-field ones from me. As a professional singer myself, I think I like emotion rather than simply range. I will nominate Justin Currie (Del Amitri) and Jackson Browne.

Why is it 'pompous' not to know who won Eurovision in 1974? I know it was Abba, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't answer that question for any year since the thing started. Does that make me 'pompous' too?
