Aaron Lewis for me, don't think he's had a mention yet:

Agreed, Peter Gabriel is a great singer.

Some slightly left-field ones from me. As a professional singer myself, I think I like emotion rather than simply range. I will nominate Justin Currie (Del Amitri) and Jackson Browne.
Nothing left field about JB. Voice like mellow honey, although he's losing the high notes a little these days.

Got to be a mention somewhere for Devin Townsend. Similar in some respects to Corey Taylor with a super heavy group (Strapping Young Lad) and more melodic solo work.

A million times this. The man's an opera singer.

Townsend absolutely, monster voice.

Sebastian Bach in his best days and Russell Allen all the time!

Absolutely, Nightwish are a great band. She's their best singer, which is impressive considering how good Tarja was.

I'd forgotten about Townsend. I saw him with Steve Vai on the Sex and Religion tour in the early nineties.

Kiss are often seen as novelty rock but I've always thought Paul Stanley was a superb singer - far better than the band's 'brand' might permit him credit for.

Agreed, Stanley in his prime was pretty awesome. Sadly he has pretty much totally lost his voice now, but Kiss continue to perform. It really is time to knock it on the head, they must have way more than enough money by now.

Layne Staley for me. Something haunting and very emotional about his vocals although given his demons that's very understandable.

As already mentioned Chris Cornell is/was up there frown

Nobody has mentioned Don Henley?

Gravely voiced drummer, guitarist singer/songwriter from the Eagles has always been a favourite of mine. Similar to Kiss in a previous post, perhaps the Eagles have gone on for too long, but what an amazing back catalogue.

Yep, Don Henley was an outrageous singer in his prime, and actually only recently has started to lose his voice a bit. He was certainly still in amazing form on the ‘Hell Freezes Over’ tour, but thinking about it, that is nearly 25 years ago now!

I think ‘The Last Resort’ is an amazing song and a fantastic vocal performance.

No-one's mentioned Ronnie James Dio yet so...Ronnie James Dio.
Ronnie James Dio was a great vocalist and was brilliant when he was in Black Sabbath. However, I rate another Sabbath vocalist as being better than Dio, and that is Tony Martin. Both on record and live, I thought Martin actually surpassed Dio's singing

A friend of mine asked this question of a classically trained singer he knows who does some singing teaching on the side and has quite eclectic taste. Apparently he finds most rock singers irritating because they often seem to have a good sense of the sound required but hopeless technique. But he did rate Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford.

Have you heard opera singers attempting rock music?

I'm sure their technique is great, but it usually sounds awful.

This is more the answer to the question I asked, not jus a list of singers you think are good rockers which is what most of the replies have been. I mean, Ringo Starr? You are kidding, right?

I think most of the "grunge" era had some seriously talented singers... Staley, Cornell, Weiland... even Cobain. Vedder and Lanegan have their moments too.

I mentioned Ringo but not in the context of being a 'good' singer.
