Yes, but a band by any other name would sound as sweet.

Aye, a nonsensical name, but their one hit is wonderful and is deeply satisfying to play on guitar.

Yes on their Australian tour in 1965, and seeing them was all anyone did because you couldn't hear them.

Does anyone else think The Beatles is just about the crappest name ever however?

seen a good couple of tribute bands but sadly never the actual Beatles. I console myself with having seen McCartney live a couple of times singing Beatles songs it was simply incredible

I actually meant, come up with a better name for the Beatles, not just list bands with better names.

And of course it needs to be in an early 1960s context.
Difficult.

I've spent ages trying. It's not as easy as I thought.

It doesn't make the name The Beatles any better.
There is no name other than the Beatles. been around 58 years now. You kinda get used to it.

I have heard people say 'never trust a teetotaler'. I don't trust anyone that says the Beatles were crap.
Disparaging remarks about the Beatles tend to come from those who don't know what the world was like before them.

It's the same story for a lot of trailblazers. Lady Chatterly's Lover seems a bit tame now too. No one remembers what the fuss was about.

For my money the only crap thing about the Beatles is their name.
I used to work with a bloke who thought The Clash were the be all and end of music, full stop, he never missed an opportunity to tell me that everything The Beatles ever recorded sounded the same. Pointing out to him that 'Love me Do' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows' were recorded only three and a half years apart but are creatively light years away from each other just fell on deaf ears. The latter was recorded while 'Rubber Soul' was still in the album charts, which shows how quickly they moved on, they rarely stood still. To cram all of that creativity and adventure into less than ten years is astonishing when you look back on it.

I was listening to alternative versions and outakes of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' last week, I still get the same feeling now I that did when I first heard the finished article fifty years odd years ago, each time feels just like the first. Geoff Emerick's book is well worth reading for an insight into how they got their thoughts and ideas onto tape.

better not tell him about the "crickets" then.
Why would anyone want to discuss the name of the most successful band in the history of Pop Music and who still sell well now.
Since getting Amazon Prime and Echo its been great to just think of a Beatles song and have it played.

I would argue that there has never been, anywhere close, a Beatles part two. Many have tried, including ,ELO, but none have succeeded.
No you're right I guess, I did say could! I just think if they had continued then what ELO were producing might just have been what they sounded like.
Paul McCarthy is on record himself as saying ELO was the band that The Beatles would have become had they kept going.

Jeff Lynne also produced their last 'official' single; Free as a Bird.

According to Alan Partridge it was WINGS that the Beatles could have become.

Was that at the Stadium, Rushcutters Bay, Sydney, by any chance?

Hammersmith Odeon, Christmas 1964. Screaming girls drowned out what they were playing so song titles were projected onto the front of the stage.

Pete McCarthy wrote a lovely book called McCarthy's Bar. His principle was you can't walk past a bar with your name on it.

Did I say Off Topic? I meant to.

They have had their moments though. Some 'Worst Beatles Tracks' Taken from various lists:

Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Why Don't we do it in the Road.
I like Ob La Di a lot, and whilst Maxwells is certainly one of the weaker songs on Abbey Road, it's a decent enough song.

The story I heard was that Abbey Road was considered by the Beatles to be their final album so, instead of taking their time developing ideas into songs, they simply strung together what they had. They had some songs and some ideas, squidge it all together and hey presto! an album.
