For me, one of the standout records of the last 25 years is Southeastern by Jason Isbell. It’s very much a country record at heart.
Regularly listen to Another Country on BBC Scotland for some great coverage of the country music scene on both sides of the Atlantic.

I've started trying Kris Country as one of my digital radio stations in the car, I find some of the modern country seems samey and whiney, is that trying to be "crossover"? Other stuff seems simpler and brings a smile - "I've got friends in low places", "Redneck yacht club", etc.
Yep couldn't agree more, dislike most of the cross over stuff!Love the story telling, think Kenney Chesney is a pretty good story teller in his songs!

Love Chris Stapleton, Eric Church's latest album is also pretty good!
Have you managed to see anyone perform out there? Its my dream holiday to visit Nashville and see either Alan Jackson or Tim Mcgraw, at the Opre!
I travelled out to Atlanta to see Chris Stapleton, Marty Stuart and Brent Cobb in October, a fantastic experience! My girlfriend and I went to see Colbie Caillat (my girlfriend is a fan, I can take or leave her work) at Analog at Hutton Hotel, one of the best venues I've ever been to. The decor was incredible and the sound was superb.Have you managed to see anyone perform out there? Its my dream holiday to visit Nashville and see either Alan Jackson or Tim Mcgraw, at the Opre!
Other than that I didn't see any 'big' country acts; I did get my metal fix by seeing Machine Head in November though! Most journey's into the city involved visiting the bars in and around Broadway and Printers Alley.
I found Eric Church very difficult to get into initially (his voice can be a bit whiny at times), Chief is a pretty good album though!

I spent a few days in Nashville, didn't see any big names but the beauty of being able to walk into any bar at any time and see decent live music was just brilliant.
That's the beauty of the city, the music in and around it is phenomenal. The level of musicianship is like nothing I've ever experienced.towser said:

Recently I've been liking Brothers Osborne, The Cadillac Three and Whiskey Myers
I love the humour in some country stuff. We just don't have the same over here in our music.
Admittedly some of it can be a bit cheesy but you just can't imagine a UK artist singing about a Ford Transit in the same way Brad Paisley can sing about a 4x4! Or someone singing about the local Wetherspoons like Toby Keith does in "I love this bar"
Some of the videos are great too, they really go in for story telling.
First got into it on a holiday to Wyoming years ago. Loved the country music stations.

I have been spiralling down the country music path for the past 10 years or so, there are some extremely talented acts out there at the moment. Admittedly I prefer the stuff closer to the rock side of things, but have seen quite a few acts over the past few years as there seems to be a bit of a fanbase growing for it in the UK.
Saw Eric Church a few years ago supported by the Cadillac Three, they have some really good stuff. Kip Moore is very good too.
My favourite above all though is Whiskey Myers, I am seeing them in May for the fourth time. They are just outstanding, very talented musicians and a great live act. Found out about them by accident when they supported the Cadillac Three in Glasgow, I was hooked half way through the first song. Proper loud guitar driven music, and the slower songs are good too.
I have been listening to a lot of William Clark Green recently too, he is brilliant. Very talented band too. Not sure if he will ever come to the UK mind you

Did anyone attend Country to Country this year?
Sunday was my first time, loved Ashley McBride, a really good stage presence and personality, she comes across as very funny. Lyle Lovett was good, a bit to sombre for the event (in my eyes) but his band are super tight! Chris Stapleton, as expected, was superb!

Gave it a miss for the first time this year! Only interested in Stapelton and not willing to pay £100+ when I can see decent country for £60 and lower in better venues. Glad you had a good time! There is always a good crowd and fun atmosphere there!

Yikes, over £100!? Thankfully we had the use of a suite, I doubt I would have gone if it had cost that much!Glad you had a good time! There is always a good crowd and fun atmosphere there!

Wow, I thought I was the only guy in the UK who had found WCG! I love his stuff, I also discovered TC3 when they supported Eric in London and BlackBerry Smoke too! Some of the stuff is so underrated. I have family in Texas so the Texas country music scene is something that I follow. Ive just booked tickets for Hayes Carll in Brighton this year and I think this month we are going to Ryan Bingham in London! I just wish more artists came over here from the states as there is a real underground following. Saw Eric Church a few years ago supported by the Cadillac Three, they have some really good stuff. Kip Moore is very good too.

Don't know much about country but do enjoy Zac Brown Band. Any similar suggestions?
Midland, the song ' drinking problem ' is great!Suggestions from me, that haven't been mentioned:
Toby Keith ("As Good As I Once Was" is a belter)
Shania Twain, obviously
Brothers Osborne ("Shoot Me Straight" is a belter)
Travis Tritt isn't too bad
There's also a guy called Big Tom with his band called the Mainliners. They're more Irish country but his music was more inline with American Country than Irish. Great great singer, stand out song for me is "The Mustang and The Cherokee", along with "Four Country Roads" and "Cheatin' Fire".
New digital station started last week. Country Hits radio.
Plays a great mix of all types. Country is getting bigger and bigger all the time in the UK. Lots of crossover acts that even my grandkids now about
Country is also pretty popular in the hard core biker world, Although it has to be the more low down nasty type of country lol.

I don’t mind classical music either. Can’t really get on with opera, modern pop or any type of boom boom music.
Me in the past life:
My thread has arrived!!!!
Massive, massive county fan here. At home and at work, the only station I have on is 97.5 WPCV - a Lakeland FL based station that IMO plays the best mix of new talent and classic hits. You can listen live from their website, and the adverts are also a fascinating snapshot into everyday life over there
I'd say my taste is mainly confined to modern (mid 90s onwards) country and pop/rock country, rather than the old timey bluegrass and banjo stuff. I went to the first 3 years of C2C but the last few years hasnt had more than one artist I like on each day, so I've given it a miss.
Off the top of my head, just a few of my favourite artists and their songs:
Kip Moore (who I've seen live in Manchester, and was excellent):
https://youtu.be/JSgyvCan8qg
Jake Owen
https://youtu.be/aRh-vBOS-dU
Band Perry (seen at C2C, a seriously talented and versatile group who stretch right from from bluegrass to almost rock, and count Queen as their favourite influence! Amazing group dynamic when live too)
https://youtu.be/pCwLsXZnFl4
Little Big Town (another versatile and talented group. Kind of blurs the line into easy listening)
https://youtu.be/V0O0nzkESTI
Like Bryan (who has one of the best voices out there)
https://youtu.be/AxVKTwAkv1k
Jason Aldean
https://youtu.be/EU-zks4FRlI
Florida Georgia Line (seen at C2C again. Good music on records but didn't rate them live tbh)
https://youtu.be/8PvebsWcpto
Of course, it's it all about young upstarts....I still have time for the "old guard" as well. I would love to see Toby Keith live, and his music videos are always darkly hilarious too....
https://youtu.be/-Fulz4ytZ54
And Alan Jackson is another with a huge career of catchy hits:

In that respect, Blake Shelton has a few good songs of the proper old blue styles, with a good ol' story and classical rhythm. My favourite is Ol Red, the story of how love got a guy in prison and got him out again!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asxrMSVrJ08
More fresh off the record press (check out the difference in appearance) is his new hit which puts a dark, melancholy spin on his usual very upbeat style
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEWGyyLiqY4
Another favourite of mine is Sara Evans. How's this for a humdinger of a traditional country song? Small town love story, check. Telecaster and slide guitar solos, check. Banjos, fiddle, double bass, 2 step beat... check check check.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoYfLo4jSeE
What makes this for me as well is that Sara has one of the best live voices I've ever heard. Listen to how tight the harmonies are with the female fiddle player during the chorus!
O/T but she has also gone on to cover several pop and rock songs, again showcasing her brilliant singing talent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw-ke1kcaGo
Runner up mention for a one-hit wonder in 2-step dance country goes to this number by Mary Chapin Carpenter:
