There are boxes packed with bullets, there are crates all stacked with boxes
There are uniforms and hardware, there are meals all wrapped in plastic
Through the night the ships are loading, every night these ships are loading
Beneath the glare of the burning floodlights and the dancing of the swarmed mosquitoes.

When they look back at us and they write down their history
What will they say about our generation?
We're the ones who knew everything and still we did nothing
Harvested everything, planted nothing.

So did you lose your faith?
Did you fall upon your sword?
I know she took a piece of your heart
And I know I had a piece of your soul

That's weird, I was just about to post that.

Can you guess what the next one after this would be?
Probably not these lyrics...

I am the warrior
I serve the death machine
Losers or conquerors
All flash past on my silver screen

Nevertheless one of my favourite songs.

It was a hot afternoon
Last day of June
And the sun was a demon
The clouds were afraid
A good start to that song I agree, but the lyrics take a distinct turn for the worse after that, with some cringe-makingly set up rhymes. What if Billy Ray had driven a Ford, I wonder, how would Bobby have coped with that?

Agreed. Like the last line in this verse:

She threw back her hair
Like I wasn't there
She sipped on a julep
Her shoulders were bare
And I tried not to stare
When I looked at her two lips

Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace"
As she slams the door in his drunken face,
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool

Oh, dear. This must be where we part.

I was thinking of Scott McKenzie and San Francisco.

Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes:

Sometimes I feel so happy,
Sometimes I feel so sad.
Sometimes I feel so happy,
But mostly you just make me mad.

Suede - The Wild Ones:

There's a song playing on the radio
Sky high in the airwaves on the morning show
And there's a lifeline slipping as the record plays
As I open the blinds in my mind I'm believing that you could stay

And Lou Reed also has one of the best first lines ever from Wild Child:

I was talkin' to Chuck in his Genghis Khan suit and his wizard's hat

The little clock's stopped ticking now,
We're swallowed in the stomach room,
The only sound to tear the night,
Comes from the man upstairs

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said you can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away

Just wouldn't happen in this day and age biggrin

Purple haze, all in my brain,
Lately things don't seem the same,
Actin' funny, but I don't know why,
Excuse me while I kiss the sky.

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
In a Kenworth pullin' logs
Cab-over Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs

What do you say when you write with no words?
Feel a song that's never been heard?
How do know if you did it all?
What do you do when you've done it all?

When I saw you and him talking
Something deep down in my soul said, cry boy
When I saw you and him, walking

I've been a moonshiner
For seventeen long years
I've spent all my money
On whiskey and beer

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real

They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlour is filled with sailors
The circus is in town

Bob Dylan, Desolation Row

Inspired by the story of the lynching of three black circus workers in 1920 on fabricated accusations of rape.

I went home with a waitress the way I always do
How was I to know she was with the Russians, too?
I was gambling in Havana, I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns, and money, Dad, get me out of this...

A couple of frat guys from Abilene
Drove out all night to see Robert Earl Keen
At the KPIG "Swine and Soiree Dance"
They wore baseball caps and khaki pants...

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
I've been for a walk on a winters day
I'd be saFe and warm if I was in LA
California dreaming on such a winters day

She walked the aisle in an eggshell blue,
Compromising white,
While the purple thistles twisted,
In the fading spring twilight...

Hey, little dolly with the blue jeans on
I want to ramrod with you honey, till half-past dawn
Let your hair down mama and pick up this beat
Come on and meet me tonight down on Bluebird Street

Well Jimmy Lee was hookin' 'round the far turn of a funky southern Florida dirt track
He had mud caked on his goggles and a screamin' 350 stacked up on his back
Well as he passed the stands he was feelin' all tuckered out
When through the roar of his engine he heard somebody shout "Stand on it, come on boy, Stand on it"

And so the story goes they wore the clothes
They said the things to make it seem improbable
Whale of a lie like they hope it was

Only three lines in the first verse.
