Two years since anyone posted on here, and I can't believe nobody's mentioned Autechre. One of my fave bands. Probably invented idm, and an extremely varied output. Contrast 'Bike' from Incunabula with 'Xylin Room' from Draft 7.30.

Did anyone use to go to Eurobeat 2000? I went a few times and loved it, but most of my clubbing in that er was in Brighton.
Yes, proper fking hard tunes. Alex Hazzard and Mrs Woods were epic.

Fallen out of love with mainstream radio when in the car - most of the time I use YouTube for old dnb, jungle, dark side mixes from years ago.

Great memories of World Dance, Telepathy, Dreamscape...

I’d posted on another thread before, but my brother DJ’s an all vinyl ‘golden era’ set on Twitch, these then get uploaded to mix cloud.. mostly jungle, with a bit of other stuff thrown in. It’s normally just a small group of mates, but he’s had the odd drop in from across the globe.. all equally welcome!

https://m.mixcloud.com/AceroneUK should see you through a few car journeys!

https://m.twitch.tv/djacer/home for the live sets, normally Mon/Thurs eve, but not on tonight.

One for the trance family, so maybe a little more relaxed than most of this thread, but this mix from 2000 contains some absolutely classic tunes from when trance was king, wonderfully mixed on vinyl by Tiesto.

The whole In Search of Sunrise series are worth a listen, but to pick just one, this is a good place to start.

1. "Tantrix" Tastexperience
2. "Golden Desert" (Part 2) LN Movement
3. "Summerbreeze" Kamaya Painters
4. "Touch Me" Rui Da Silva
5. "Eugina" (Michael Woods Remix) Salt Tank
6. "Perception" (New Vocal Mix) Cass & Slide
7. "Diamondback" Mekka
8. "Dreaming" (Lucid's 12" Club Mix) BT
9. "Delirio" (Venus Mix) Baracoa
10. "An Angel Saved My Life" (Mark Shimmon & 3rd Degree Bern's Mix) Fortress 7
11. "4AM" (Marc O' Tool Remix) Ballroom
12. "Home" (featuring Discovery) Coast 2 Coast
13. "Tyrantanic" (Slacker's Kingdom Come Mix) Breeder
14. "Airtight" Max Graham

I don't have time to delve into any of these genres much these days, despite having a real affinity with some of the music. I've struggled in the last decade to find artists I've enjoyed more than a couple of songs from; while the die hards may berate me I've really enjoyed the output of CamelPhat, and then the whole retro synthwave of Perturbator, Carpenter Brut and a few others.

Whatever happened to Tiesto and the like eh?

I'm currently listening to some trance from around 1999 - 2005. That was when I discovered it and boy oh boy, it still sounds good. Not such a big fan of trance now. Mainly listen to progressive with the odd bit thrown in.

Not a fan of modern style EDM etc with the big claxxon sounds. Each to their own though.

Tiesto and the like are still around, but don't make music like they used to.

It's an interesting thing really, how music changes and how artists change.

Several things have happened since 2010-ish;

The rise of "EDM" as a genre, mainly in the US had a huge impact on what dance music was. American audiences wanted something harder and faster, and had little patience for the buildups and breakdowns of trance. It was no longer about feeling like you were somewhere else, but more about headbanging and jumping around. There was likely some crossover from the DnB/Dubstep scene here, with artists like Marshmellow and Guetta "putting on a show" rather than performing a solid mix of awesome tunes. More about the DJ than the music.

As dance music was played less on the radio then artists like Tiesto found they could have bigger hits and make more money by collaborating with artists from other genres - Calvin Harris is great at that too. Produce a "dum dum dum" track and have Rhianna sing over it and suddenly you have produced a radio friendly track which appeals to your fans and hers. Twice the singles, twice the money.

Streaming services and the iPod haven't helped either - people decide if they are going to listen to a song within the first 5 seconds, and so the track has to "grab" you from the off. No beautiful long intro, just straight into a kick drum to get the audience's attention. As well as this, Spotify etc pay artists by number of streams - 6 10 min songs per hour generates half as much money as 12 5 min songs per hour. Therefore, keep it short, get more money for less work.

I've been going to Above and Beyond gigs since about 2007, and back then it was all about the hands in the air moments. The entire crowd knew the words, and the whole crowd would join as one several times during the set. You used to get really long pauses and really special moments when everyone was together. Go now and that's mainly gone. Every song is pretty similar - short buildup, no pause, short breakdown with a big heavy drumbeat. Those special moments have gone, to be replaced with the opportunity for some kids to jump around. It's sad, it really is.

On the whole, I blame the American's and their "EDM" of the early 2010's. The rise of Coachella, of Electric Daisy Carnival, the need to be seen at these places even if you didn't enjoy the music; for the 'gram. They ruined what trance was, what house was, even was drum and base and dubstep were, to be replaced by some mash of all of the genres but losing what was at the soul of each.

Great post.

Yeah, I know about Tiesto etc., I just meant in terms of how they changed. You can see why they have done it. Kerching!

I've listened to Above and Beyond for a long, long time. Haven't been to one of their gigs though. As you say, they have changed. I prefer their older stuff really. I like Jono Grant's older stuff too. I have a CD with some tracks on and he is referred to by name on them instead of Oceanlab etc.

As I mentioned above, I'm listening to more and more progressive stuff now. Some of it seems like trance of old with the journey (the long intro, break in the middle etc.).

Personally, I'm not a fan of the term EDM or the sort of music associated with it. I jokingly say it's what the kids are all listening to, and it is. When you see the main festivals and what they play, you can see why people like Armin etc. have changed their style to get on the books.

I've been to some wonderful events in the past (Godskitchen at Code, Cream Digital Love in Nottingham, Renaissance at Media in Nottingham etc.). I even went to the Minstry of Sound in 2019 aged 40 to see Aly & Fila. hehe There are some specific gigs now that I would like to go to, but the main stuff seems a bit naff to me. I would like to see Boris Brejcha live at some point.

Edit to add - currently listening to Trance Nation 1999 mixed by Ferry Corsten. Travel - Bulgarian (Signum remix) - what a track!

Arksun - Arisen is another great one.

If you like the old school then I would thoroughly recommend this channel on Youtube. He has an amazing collection of old mixes, Essential mixes, live events and everything in the middle. Browse the uploads, they start about 1995 ish and reach right up to the present day. Go and get lost in some 2005 PvD, Oakenfold from 1999 or listen to one of Carl Cox's 25 (?!!!!!!) Essential mixes. There must be thousands of hours on there. He has another channel too, there is a link to it somewhere.
