The earliest versions were sung from a woman's point of view. The Animals version changed the lyrics. I assume that a piss-head gambler was more acceptable to the BBC than was a prostitute. smile

Apparently, the arrangement recorded by the Animals came from Dave van Ronk through Dylan.
Interesting, thanks

That song caused Alan Price to leave The Animals. Price pulled a bit of a flanker by having "Trad, arr A Price" printed on the label, thereby trousering all the composer's royalties, much to the chagrin of the other band members. Shortly after, he was out, the cited reason being "fear of flying".

I wondered that but gamblers in Westerns are always a bit dandified, witness Maverick or Yancey Derringer so maybe they needed lots of clothes.

I was thought it was gun when it was first released. I am that old.

Many versions, in several time signatures, on Youtube, from Georgia Turner to the Animals via Woody Guthrie, Huddie Leadbetter, Joan Baez, van Ronk, Dylan, Nina Simone, and others.
Came from Dylan through Dave van Ronk.

Van Ronk was furious with Dylan for stealing his arrangementbefore he had a chance to record it. ("A Freewheelin' Time' Suze Rotolo)
