Drumroll please .......... V2 paperbag

I see what happened with the 1st one .... my machine crashed as I was half-way through summarising the data; and I restored the wrong version, so had excluded the amalgamated list I had already done!

Anyway, here we go ....... with slightly tweaked numbers

We have the 1st PHers Top 50 bands. But before we get into the details; here's some background info:
  • 51 PHers votes have been counted (so far)
  • A total of 494 votes were counted
  • Covering 223 bands
  • For people who multiple-posted or posted more than 10, only the 1st 10 on the 1st post counted
  • Where bands share a ranking, they are simply sorted alphabetically
  • I'm only showing 48 bands, as its conveniently where the bands with 3 votes got to smile
  • I'll update this list every few days/weeks (depending on number of inputs).
So here were go ......

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they deserve to be on the list more than a good few that have made it in my eyes....

it's mad, but of the list i put up ( based on influence and body of work) there are more than 1 band i don't actually listen to...if my spotify top 10 is anything to go by only depeche mode and deftones should really be on my listbiggrin... but then a top 10 of totally obscure stuff isn't gonna contribute a thing!

I listen to a LOT of music but it's ever-changing.

The only two bands I have consistently gone back to over the decades are Floyd and Steely Dan. I guess from my punk years I'd have The Stranglers, Ian Dury & the Blockheads and maybe he Ruts. From the acid jazz period JTQ. Early house music is just too diverse so I'd go later - Disclosure or maybe Todd Terje. For solo artist I like the likes of Tracy Chapman, Rickie Lee Jones, Jonathan Wilson Michael Kiwanuka. From the soul end of things I've recently discovered Roy Ayers.

I'vw skipped tons of stuff I listen to beacuse it doesn't seem to fit the definition of "band" - eg Sly & Robbie and stiff they did with Grace Jones, all the great bebop jazzers (Miles Davis, Coltrane. Adderly, etc etc), all the great soul singers (Marlene Shaw, Jocelyn Brown, Barbar Tucker, Caleen Anderson) etc etc etc

Pink Floyd
Steely Dan
The Stranglers
The Blockheads
James Taylor Quartet
ToddTerje
Rickie Lee Jones
Roy Ayers
Jonathan Wilson
Michael Kiwanuka

Everyone has different musical tastes but I think there's one thing we should all agree on for this and any other top 10/50/100 etc. bands and that is that Led Zeppelin are no. 1. yes

End of debate. hehe

Earlier this evening having a break I looked through all those again, inc mine.

Popped over to a long-term friend's place (been watching groups as long as me - an eternity, well, 1960s - and asked him who he would list in a top ten?
He just quipped 'Bet you just put Fleetwood Mac and TP&TH?'
hehe 'And a few others' I said.

He looked at the thread. 'I wouldn't list some of those as top 10.'
'Ok, is there anyone missing out of all those?'

'Yeah, but unless they're as old as us, they might not have heard of them!'
'Anyway, I'll give you the bloody obvious omission from the 80s onwards who I'd place well before some of those' he said.
'Their records have brought a lot of pleasure to millions.'
'Who is that?' I asked.

'A few member changes over the years, one died in 2000.'
'Give me a clue' I said.

'The hiatus from Genesis'.
'The Living Years', 'Silent Running', 'All I Need Is a Miracle', 'Taken In', 'Word of Mouth', 'Over My Shoulder', 'Another cup of c......'

Oh yeah, I'll give you that.

Mike and The Mechanics.

And I even bought their latest incarnation album 'Out of the Blue' with Roachford singing earlier this year!

Me either. There is only probably one or two from each that I'd say I'd listen to.

And I don't get all the hate for The Who. Great band.

I'm failing to see the love for Dire Straits too if I'm honest. A couple of decent songs but loads of filler on most of their albums - and seeing them live was like watching paint dry.

I know it isn't a popular opinion around here but I'm not that fond of Led Zepplin, indifferent about AC/DC but do love Pink Floyd!.

The list is bizarre. How can the Arctic Monkeys feature in a list that doesn't include Oasis? What population is that that likes the Arctic Monkeys, but doesn't think Oasis are miles better. There's literally no one in that Venn Diagram.

I've just put Pink Floyd on top confirm my view that they're crap because I can't believe they're at the top.

If I'm reading it correctly only three people out of well over 500 gave the Arctic Monkeys a vote.

As for Oasis, well IMO they were derivative back in the day and their songs haven't aged well.

Not necessarily.

Gilmour is quoted by both critics and fellow guitarists alike as having a technique and sound to die for. A unique ability, when creating a solo, to let all the unnecessary notes fall off the table. Not forgetting that "Shine On....." - the whole tune - was fashioned from a four note Gilmour ringing arpeggio (Bb / F / G / E) which resolves to a C major chord, which then results in a tune that resonates in G minor.

Not to mention Rick Wright's harmonies on things like "The Great Gig......", or Waters' bass work on "Money".

Anyway.

I'm amazed (and happy) that Soundgarden still make the top 50 bands of all time, not just the top 50 rock bands!
