One of my all-time favourites: Mark Knopfler's Speedway At Nazareth. I'm ashamed to say that I skipped past this for a number of years as the first three minutes are more than a little plodding, but from about 3:00 the guitar starts to make its presence felt, and from 3:25 or so to the end is just one big solo.

I'd not heard that before, but that is marvelloushttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYtU1GfqjZ0

At this stage I have a confession to make which may completely alter your opinion of me.
I am besotted by Frank Zappa, and have bought each of his records in turn since they first started appearing in the mid sixties. I am what you term a 'completist'.
<snip>
But back to the guitar solos. Everybody's favourite seems to be Zappa's album Hot Rats, and there are a couple of numbing solos on there. However, you should be aware that recently a multi album box has been released that contains the original studio recordings that Zappa used as the source material for the published edits. It's an expensive box, but it is all on Spotify, so for anybody with even half an interest in the great man, it is an essential listen.
That's really rather amazing!! Get it online sir!!! I am besotted by Frank Zappa, and have bought each of his records in turn since they first started appearing in the mid sixties. I am what you term a 'completist'.

I was going to suggest that most of hot rats is a face melting guitar solo!
Excluding the 6 lines from cb on Wtp of course!
I'm always posting the BBC 1968 king kong yt on this forum so wont do it again. But when it switches to Frank and gets all serious, hairs stand up...
Have always loved this bit of simple slide from Little Feet at 3:20ish.

Driving home from work earlier, and R3 started playing "Walking The Dog" by Gershwin. I'm not in the mood for such light-hearted, jolly-hockeysticks stuff at the moment, so I changed channels to ClassicFM.
I caught it just as it started playing "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" by Michal Nyman.
A wonderful tune, here transcribed for guitar:-

Fripp and Eno, Long time favourite for me, solo starts around 1.20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbU1zYzD-Tw
Adding this as it’s become quite popular recently.
Steve lukather on Lionel Richies tube running with the Night.
Steve sat in the booth and played along with the tune the first time he heard it. When he asked to record he was told, you just have.
It’s the last minute or so.

Considering he was not feeling too well when he recorded it, it goes to show that Bob on a bad day is better than most players out there."Some of the work I did with Bowie was in the same kind of category of immediacy and honesty for me as a player. Eno, again, the solo on Baby's On Fire was there. I'd just gotten off a plane from America. I had the flu. I was exhausted. I was wretched, and yet the solo was burning. It doesn't matter how you feel."

You can take any date from the US Crimson tour of 73 / 74 and you're guaranteed a Fripp solo of similar fire.

Some of those early VH rifffs are just awesome. I remember to this day exactly where I was age 14 when VH 1 was released, and I've got several tracks in the car at the moment. Thanks Eddie.https://youtu.be/HI3aPJkZmNU

It is a fantastic piece and really suites the guitar. I didn’t realise it’s correct title, I always referred to it as ‘the theme from the piano’. A good friend of mine has played in nymans band for years. Some very bonkers music comes out of that ensemble. I caught it just as it started playing "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" by Michal Nyman.

Scaggs, on the other hand, is a truly great musician, but a complete nutjob. He sincerely believes that Donald Trump is a prophet, anointed by God

I've been revisiting a lot of Led Zeppelin's work recently, and it remains brilliant. Four truly talented individuals at their creative and playing peak. However, as much as I love Page's playing and breadth of style (beautiful and subtle Bron Yr Aur to the aural bombards of Kashmir and When The Levee Breaks to the blues of Since I've Been Loving You, for instance) I find his solos sometimes lack the clarity and moods of, say, Blackmore/Gilmore. It's just a very different style, I think, and certainly Zeppelin wouldn't be anywhere the same with altered guitar work. Perhaps it's also a difference between the Gibson/Fender sounds.Since I've Been Loving You (The Song Remains the Same)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZiN_NqT-Us
Comfortably Numb has been mentioned previously (the Pompeii version), but I've recently rediscovered this version from the Pulse concerts. The likes of Gilmore and Blackmore can do more in a few melodic phrases than a whole era of ultra-fast, double-tapping, squealing virtuosos, IMHO.
And Blackmore at his best... first, a cup of water and blistering solo with Deep Purple...
and with Rainbow (RIP Ronnie and Cozy) at their height...
From their first album to 'Rock And Roll' I think Rainbow were phenomenal.
Perhaps an honourable mention to the great Uli Jon Roth from Scorpions, too. Fashion-wise, it looks like they did a run-through raid of the ladies scarves outlet at the local department store (and Klaus Meine looks like Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes To Hollywood), but they can still play.
