It's why I posted it in my OP on page #1 hehe
I know - I figured after 4 pages it’s still rules as one of the most epic moments on a guitar ever recorded
It's just a shame that the clip starts at the guitar solo and misses out the rather epic keyboard solo that goes right before it. Both are worthy of gold medals imho.

Aye, agree with all that.

IIRC, wasn't that Govan's first and only take on that solo?

Rick Graham really lights it up on this one. He has the touch, the tone and the phrasing to really do this justice. The way he resolves the descending line at 01:20 is music to my ears.

Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D minor on solo guitar

Fair play to the lad, he's working hard on this

I've got some Deep Purple somewhere featuring Ritchie Blackmore toying with that. Well, bits of it anyway. biggrin

Rory Gallagher at the Isle of Wight. Just brilliant IMO. The whole song is basically Rory soloing.

Great topic. Here are mine: (sorry for the lack of You Tube links – I’m at work).

Cream, Crossroads 2:32
I think this was the first solo I learnt when I took up the guitar aged 17. I happened to live near a highly regarded guitar teacher who had books and videos out etc, and his speciality was blues rock, so that’s what I learnt, and this was the first song we did. We started with the riff, then the simple solo, and the real challenge at the time was the second solo. I can still remember how effortless he made it seem.

Joe Satriani, The Extremist 1:21
I simply can’t play this, even at half speed. It’s a complete finger twister – even the apparently simple phrases are fiendishly difficult.

Joe Satriani, Surfing with the Alien 1:10 & 2:39
Genius. I saw Satch live years ago and I still remember him opening with this and it totally blowing my mind how good he was.

Smashing Pumpkins, Geek USA 2:58
Also paired with my favourite drum solo.

Smashing Pumpkins, Soma – 4:23
Suits the song so well.

Pink Floyd, Time 3:18
So many to choose from, but I really like this solo.

The Unforgiven 3:48
Yes, it’s not the fiddliest, but this is still a fantastic solo. The story Kirk tells is that everyone laughed at his original solo and told him to come up with something better. He was angry and defiant when he recorded this, basically saying “fk you – watch this”.

Pearl Jam, Alive 3:38
Astonishing. I remember my friend learning the entire thing when we were at Uni. I didn’t have the patience as it’s 2 minutes long.

Lastly, Slash, who strangely tends to have his best guitar moments at the end of songs with other stuff going on at the same time:
Paradise City 4:45
November Rain 7:10
Plus, of course:
Sweet Child o’ Mine 3:34

Quite poignant as the 'Keith' in question is Keith Richards

Surely there’s got to be something from Dire Straits in there...
One of my all-time favourites: Mark Knopfler's Speedway At Nazareth. I'm ashamed to say that I skipped past this for a number of years as the first three minutes are more than a little plodding, but from about 3:00 the guitar starts to make its presence felt, and from 3:25 or so to the end is just one big solo.
