You don't need to know music theory to bang out a few tunes and have fun on any instrument.
You don't, but it can enrich your grasp of music. I'm pretty sure George Harrison didn't just "bang out" the chord progressions to tunes like "Here Comes The Sun", or "Something", or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
Thought the Beatles famously didn't have any music theory training and learnt their craft in bars in Germany (?) before being signed. But whatever, not sure what that has to do with learning the guitar, unless the stages of guitar ability are literally zero to George Harrison. smile

See quote a few big names, when interviewed claim no knowledge of music theory, right oh!
Want to read a book, need to know the language it's written in,want to play music, need to know some of the 'language',theory
I've absolutely no idea what you're trying to say there ! smile
You can't read a book unless you understand the language it's written in,it's more pleasurable and interesting to play and listen to music,if you understand the language, theory,it's written,in,quite simple really, like you?
Except you can. You can read Ladybird how to use commas or Twefth night. They're not like each other. Music is the same. But there is no guarantee you will understand the message in either.

I can well imagine that he did.

being playing about for a couple of weeks now , first tried justin guitars but now im trying marty music - i think i prefer his teaching style... more fun maybe but he misses out on the chord charts so ive bought a book with them in to practice, but this one uses the thumb on the E string rather than the index finger!
only learnt E A G and D and practiced between them. also played with the start of 7 nation army and a couple of metallica songs.
enjoying it so far but wow... sore finger tips!!

I have been playing for 30 years but one of the best songs to learn chord changes is Desire by U2. D, A and E and quick changes.

OK This thread has just cost me £400+ at the local guitar shop!
I had a cheap acoustic when I was young & Bert Weedons play in a day which I never managed.
Just bought an electric, practice amp lead etc. from a local place in Gillingham. Let's see if I persevere this time how much I learn......

Just to add, I'm finding these Jim Dunlop 'Max Grip' picks really helpful and a lot easier to use than standard picks

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jim-Dunlop-449P1-0-Guitar...

Or the better looking EVH version

Does it? Mine are sore at the mo & I'm doing around 40mins a day most days.
First lesson tomorrow with a local guy. I was already learning A & D and he suggested adding E to that as well.

Yeah but the flip side is that you can tell when you're haven't been practising enough because you start to get some sensation back in them again!

That's not a bad idea. It's also real easy to make the E major chord into an E minor.

And then when you break a finger and can't play for 6 months they fall off and when you recover you have to start them all over again
