I've been mulling over the question of this thread, and I think I would nominate Madonna. She's managed to become a huge, long-term star based on what can be charitably described as 'modest' talent. Certainly, she was a pretty dodgy singer until she got trained to do 'Evita', at which point, to be fair, she markedly improved. Some of the earlier singing, though, was fairly awful.

No he CAN sing. He just seemed to have found his niche as an 80s novelty pop act.

Mik, you may not like the sound of his voice, but on this song he is singing very well.

I haven’t got the hang of proof reading, or, predictive text, it seems. smile

Reading between the lines, you thought Rod a wker.

He speaks fondly of you, why is the feeling not reciprocated?

Although we bought them cheap, we were sat in the most expensive zone, if I’d paid £140 I’d have been more annoyed for sure.

It was just a bad performance, mainly due to his age, of course.

Big fan of his in the early 70’s, one of the best rock vocalists the UK has produced, this concert was a million miles from there though frown

It seems I should put it in the ‘unpopular opinions’ thread biggrin

The final straw though was, when he showed a video of himself getting knighted!

yes

Beck's welding of major and minor solo lines on that tune is wonderful, as is Stewart's vocals (also on Morning Dew and 'ol Man River)

Someone once said that if Mama Cass Elliot had shared her meals with Karen Carpenter they'd both be alive today. I think that if John Martyn could have shared some of his personality with Nick Drake they'd both also be alive today.
4 amazing voices, but those statements ! Carpenter had an eating disorder, she didn't need extra dinners, she needed help that she wouldn't take.

Martyn and Drake both abused drugs so no idea what sharing personality would do,? Expand there taste ?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Nick Drake suffer with depression as well? Sometime ago someone said Nick Drake's passing hit JM big time and then a few years later his mate Paul Kossoff passed away, it does make me wonder if these tragedies added to JM's often wild and whacky behaviour?

Fair play to Rod or should that be Sir Rod on being proud of his knighthood, a couple of interviews from the late 70s where he's a bit too arrogant for my liking but other than that he's been a top bloke in popular music.

It was just the final straw, in a bad performance. I’d forgotten how many poor singles he’d released too, and, he sung them all.

I’m sure he’s a top bloke, but, that’s how I felt at the end of that particular concert frown
