Love will tear us apart was the first song played by the band at my wedding. Female vocalist did an amazing job.
We’re still together by the way 😂
I was a bit late to the party not getting into them until 88/89. A 15 yr old at boarding school.
The gloom and darkness suited the place so well.

Didn't think there was much love on here for joy division.

The film is superb - the guy should have got an Oscar.

Still my favourite band today. The angst and sadness in Ian's performances were spellbinding.

My other favourite band at the time were the cure.

Bob's take ON love will tear us apart in case you haven't heard it... Lots hate it, I think it's great, but then I'm a sucker for most covers of this song.

I have some of the above framed and mounted in my dining room. You can still get the Postcard box sets from time to time, just google the photographer.

Humble boast:

The first single that I bought. My favourite now would probably be New Dawn Fades.
I've never heard the original of New Dawn Fades but I think Moby's cover is used to great effect here:

Ian's Vox Phantom Guitar - Beautiful thing! I don't play but it would look great up on the wall of my lounge!

For me this thread has led to some Interesting background reading about joy division’s continuing influence with articles about Ian Curtis’s stone in a cemetery being stolen replaced with a new one and then attempts to steal the new stone

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/aug/06/ston...

and plans to turn his house (where he died) into a museum.(which still hasn’t happened)

Brilliant band, of course when mentioning them Ian gets most thought of and rightly so but Hooky needs some credit for some great bass lines and I’ve always really appreciated Stephen Morris’ drumming.

Favourites of mine would be, Day of the Lords, Wilderness, Exercise One and Means to an End.

Thanks for posting that, interesting background to Ian's Phantom. It's a curious thing with old Voxes that have the inbuilt effects and gadgets, even when they don't 'work' properly you can still get some incredible sounds out of them, my '67 Teardrop Starstream MkXII's wah-wah pedal wiring was buggered from new, but flicking the switch for it made a couple of the other effects sounds even better, particularly the distortion and the repeater. A lot of those Vox guitars were made in Italy, which might well explain it....!

My other half's 12'' copy of Love Will Tear Us Apart was the first record she ever let me borrow when we first got together.

On the Vox Phantom I did a little googling on the auction and stumbled across this video of someone running through the effects on the guitar, interesting piece of kit :

Only just seen this thread, JD are my favourite band. Closer is my favourite studio album, I also like their Warsaw stuff.

Visited Ians grave a few years ago, unfortunately its not the original stone as somebody has stolen the original one. Met Hooky a few times as well.

New Order live outside in Manchester 2 years ago was amazing!

Vox you say?

Loved Joy Division for a long time.

Unknown Pleasures and Closer on vinyl.

12 inch of Atmosphere etc..

Heart and Soul Box Set is all you need.

Substance was a collection of A sides and B sides.

Amazing musician and performer but having read his wife Debbie’s book and another about him / them, what a miserable character Curtis was.

He developed epilepsy later on, didn’t have it as a child. They used to get hold of and take any prescription meds they could get no matter what they were for.

His life was extremely bleak and he doesn’t come across as remotely likeable.

One former band member was dumped out of the band by being asked to check for a flat tyre on their van, they pulled over, he got out for a look and they drove off leaving him there! Generous.

Love their music though. She’s lost Control is my fave JD track.

I love Joy Division, Unknown Pleasures is one of my favourite albums and favourite album cover. I was born the year it was released (‘79) so they were before my time but I discovered them in my teens, then again this year when I got really into their music whilst stuck in my office studying. I actually spent far too much time digitally modelling the stacked plot Pulsar CP 1919 radio emission on the cover. I loved the cover before I knew what it was, but after discovering the source (and being a bit of a space nerd) I got quite obsessed with it.

It’s a great story behind its design if you haven’t read it:

I made my iPhone wallpaper from the 3D model:

Which I plan to get 3D printed in metal at some point and stick on the wall.

Not sure that's exactly fair. Epilepsy, or more so, the treating of it wasn't very good back then, and I think he was bi-polar, so sometimes he was ok and other times he wasn't.. Depression, stress, the anxiety of letting his fellow bandmates down must have been insufferable, as was clear by him taking his own life on the eve of their US Tour.

There was a story when he kicked off in a violent epileptic fit in the back of their van when returning from a gig, and in this moment of confusion they restrained him as best as they could. We shouldn't forget, these were guys in their very early 20's, living in a desolute place with an even more desperate at times Ian Curtis. He left us with a troubled yet precious legacy..
