He developed epilepsy later on, didn’t have it as a child. They used to get hold of and take any prescription meds they could get no matter what they were for.

His life was extremely bleak and he doesn’t come across as remotely likeable.

One former band member was dumped out of the band by being asked to check for a flat tyre on their van, they pulled over, he got out for a look and they drove off leaving him there! Generous.
Not sure that's exactly fair. Epilepsy, or more so, the treating of it wasn't very good back then, and I think he was bi-polar, so sometimes he was ok and other times he wasn't.. Depression, stress, the anxiety of letting his fellow bandmates down must have been insufferable, as was clear by him taking his own life on the eve of their US Tour.

There was a story when he kicked off in a violent epileptic fit in the back of their van when returning from a gig, and in this moment of confusion they restrained him as best as they could. We shouldn't forget, these were guys in their very early 20's, living in a desolute place with an even more desperate at times Ian Curtis. He left us with a troubled yet precious legacy..
Parallels with early Pink Floyd; no-one knew how to cope with Syd Barrett's mental state. After recruiting David Gilmour they tried to carry on as a five-piece but eventually on the way to gigs it got to the stage of "shall we pick up Syd?" "nah, let's not bother"...

Vox you say?

Loved Joy Division for a long time.

Unknown Pleasures and Closer on vinyl.

12 inch of Atmosphere etc..

Heart and Soul Box Set is all you need.

Substance was a collection of A sides and B sides.
I know it's a Joy Division thread but I can't let a Spacemen 3 post pass without comment. Superb band.

I bought a mint used copy of unknown pleasures for a few quid back in 1990. One of my prized possessions now.

Yes of course he was not well at all I have read 2 books about him, he was also constantly cheating on his wife who adored him & refusing to let her accompany him / the band so he could shag around etc.

Likewise with Spacemen 3, my 'local' band, I still find it slightly odd that's almost thirty years since they officially split up. I almost ran into the back of Pete Kember's car at a petrol station once around that time! I believe he now lives in America, he's still very busy recording various film soundtracks etc. His parents still live not far from me and his Dad own's a very nice E-Type.

Saw them live several times in and around Rugby, most of the venues are long gone now sadly. One of Pete's best box of tricks was an old Vox Echo unit which sounded fantastic in the small pub back rooms they played in, he often used it in conjunction with his Starstream MkXII....

Apologies for the off topic post but both bands are amongst my all time favourites wink

(I'm now getting pop up ads for Vox guitar copies in the £300 range....)

Edit : my copy of 'Perfect Prescription' is absolutely knackered!

Mine too!

Too young to have seen Joy Division. Saw New Order in Brixton.

Spacemen 3 at Keele Uni and Reading Fest,

Sonic as Spectrum in a room above a Pub in Brighton a few years ago.

I like Mobys version of New Dawn Fades a lot.

I really like John Frusciantes acoustic cover too:

Both really good, as is the original too.

This might be of interest to some ... pre-orders for signed editions of Fast Forward: Volume 2 by Stephen Morris, £20 to you. Signed Volume 1 goes for about £25 so kerching!

Only just seen this thread, JD are my favourite band. Closer is my favourite studio album, I also like their Warsaw stuff.

Visited Ians grave a few years ago, unfortunately its not the original stone as somebody has stolen the original one. Met Hooky a few times as well.

New Order live outside in Manchester 2 years ago was amazing!
A touch off topic but

Does anyone have a link to New Order live outside in Manchester? Would love to see it

As for Joy Division, have a digital file of Atmosphere, would have been worn out a long time ago if vinyl

Saw New Order in Lucca last year (smug mode), double bill with Elbow. Did Atmospheres and Love Will Tear Us Apart as encores. Lady H was getting a bit restless during NO's set (as was I to be honest) but the end was worth it.

Am I the only one who felt a bit disappointed by New Order. Yes, they did some ok stuff, but imho, unlike Joy Division, they were nothing special
