I think I know the answer but looking for confirmation

Does this mean a new tyre?

That's trivial damage only - unless you can see cords at the bottom of the crack. More likely it's just superficial damage to the thickened rubbing strip.

I suspect looking at the black tyre scuff-mark on the alloy rim that there will be a pretty deep cut in the sidewall rubber of the tyre.

If it were mine, I would likely be swapping it. A much closer look including trying to open up the flap (OOO-ERRR!) with a screwdriver or similar may be worth a look at to see more.

It is about 1/4 inch deep and angled, can't see any cords so may have got away with one.

Trying to speak to she who must be obeyed about slowing for speed bumps and keeping off kerbs is like walking on broken glass with bare feet - painful and you wonder why you ever tried.

Am tempted to get the wheels refurbed but then wonder why when next month she will touch another kerb - and it is always someone else's fault.

Will monitor and see if anything changes, will probably be a blister in a couple of days. The car doesn't do long distances or high speeds. Before anyone comments on the country of origin, it is what the dealer put on just before we test drove it, replaced a punctured Continental.

Exactly, I wouldn't waste money refurbing that.

Buy a close colour match silver paint from Halfords and a tiny modellers paintbrush to paint in the scrapes after you've cleaned the area with methylated spirit. It'll look much better and avoid corrosion setting in.

Yes - it’s the ‘MADE IN CHINA’ bit that makes it certain.

(Correct answer, it’s a rim protector it’s doing it’s job).

ETA: we, the customers, are all to blame for wanting low profile tyres and alloys, instead of higher profiles, steel wheels, and wheel covers which are about £40 to fully replace.

Well, it's probably changed a bit in 10 months of hitting kerbs biggrin

She hasn’t hit a kerb with that wheel in 10 months!
