In the late 90s I had a close friend who tried and failed to introduce me to them. They just sounded a bit angry to me, I think.

Where to start with Tool is an interesting question - they have so many fantastic songs, I have been a fan since the album Undertow was released in the early 90s.

When they get it right, they can out together a banger of a track. But they quite capable of putting out 5 good minutes in a 75 minute album of otherwise forgettable material and their hit to miss ratio has definitely got worse over the years.

Bit of a Tool fan here, it was the bizarre videos playing on the Power Hour or whatever it was called that got me into them.Lateralus is good intro, some of their stuff is brilliant but I do find some of it impenetrable!
The 2nd half of 10,000 days doesn't do anything for me.

I saw them live at Ozzfest 2001 and 2002 I think. Both times came away shaking it was that immense. Truly one of the greatest bands I've ever seenAnyone else had similar experience?

Couldn't disagree more. They've evolved and honed themselves so much over the years that their output has been getting better and better imo. Fear Innoculum is, for me, one the greatest albums of any act ever. No one else could pull off 6 10min+ tracks and get away with it, let along create such incredible pieces as Pneuma, Invincible and 7empest.I kind of see them more like a modern day Pink Floyd, but much, much better in every possible way. Anyone that's genuinely into music should check out Fear Innoculum - it transcends the various Metal categories.

The first half of 10000 days is just stunning ,wings for marie part 2 is my favourite tool song .Lateralus is good intro, some of their stuff is brilliant but I do find some of it impenetrable!

Tool forces you to have patience. At first it boring, but then you start to understand, then its liberating. Then you begin to experience and see and understand different things that actually makes you experience music instead of just hearing it for the sake of hearing it, you start listening. Then the hunger begins, and you begin hunting for the meaning and the actual theory. As a hobby musician i can only speak for myself.. Cheers!
This is my thread, Tool are my favourite band releasing new music by a long shot.
Each album gets better and better, takes a while to gel with but rewards the listener’s perseverance.
Maynard’s other projects are worth a listen, Puscifer and APC, and are like methadone until the next Tool release. Even the collaborations such as Passengers, The Witness by Adam Jones.

My favourite band. It started for me with seeing Stinkfist on Headbangers Ball when Aenima was released in 1996. It was like nothing I'd heard before and I was intrigued. So I got myself the album and that shaped my taste from then on. Amazing band and they mess with your mind in so many ways. They filter out lots of people by being deliberately obtuse. Most of the stuff they go on about, especially Maynard, is all for messing with people. Just drill down and let the music do the talking.
Admittedly some songs are more experimental than others and that does make listening to an album harder, but just make a playlist of the song songs and you're off.
Aenima and Lateralus are where they balanced out the anger and the technicality for me. Saying that, every album has great songs.
