I change my own tyres and obviously end up with the old ones cluttering up my garage.

I'm not going to fly-tip them so was wondering if there is any way of getting rid of them properly.

I live in East Kilbride and the dump (recycling centre) there doesn't take tyres.

I see there are firms who advertise a pick up service but am guessing that's for commercial outfits with hundreds to dispose of...

If you take them to a tyre fitter they’ll add them to their pile for a few quid, cash preferred.

I’ve been told they pay about £2 a tyre themselves.

Not sure how many you are talking, but people use them for swings / planters. I'd be tempted to put a couple FOC on gumtree or ebay and see if you get a bite from anyone. I'd only do a couple at a time. Alternatively are they road legal at all? If so you could sell as part warn. I've bought just legal tyres before to put on a lease I was returning when I got a puncture. Might be someone who wants them.

Son's primary school seems to have acquired a collection of old tyres that they have turned into play equipment, assault-style courses and "sculptures". Unfortunately, we're at the opposite end of the country to you, but might be worth asking about locally?

Otherwise I imagine local tyre places will take them off your hands for a few quid.

My local council tip in Cumbria will take tyres, but not sure how many in one go but it might be worth checking.

It’s the same here in Kent. I have thrown 5-6 old track or road tyres in the relevant ‘bin’ in one go, at the recycling centre, as you just drive in.

I have lived in 3 different areas of Yorkshire & all have accepted tyres at up to 4 at a time with no issues, I assumed it was the same everywhere.

Have you tried asking the local tip where they can go, as certain things are not at every one of ours, so for these exceptions you can go out of your local tip catchment area.

Hi guys

thanks for all the replies.

I've not asked the guys at the tip in recent years but it was a definite 'no' last time we tried and their website specifically says they won't take tyres.

There are derelict lock-ups in my area full to the brim front to back with old tyres.

It's a big problem rolleyes

A quick google comes up with the following depending on exactly where you are:

Pro tyre recycling in Shotts
Caledonia Recycling in Glasgow
Stud tyre recycling in Motherwell
Armour tyre recycling in Glasgow

Obviously I have no knowledge of any, but worth a call at least.

Here in North Wales, Gwynedd Council take tyres. Just to add to the ‘census’.

Use an angle grinder or sawzall to cut them into quarters to put them in a black bag then throw them in the black bag waste. What the fk do we pay our council tax for when the tip start getting uppity about what domestic waste they take?
