I'm not sure what waiting before opening the box is supposed to achieve

Something to do with damaging the lacquer as the wood expands I think. I imagine it's more likely to matter in the US where it could've been shipped from Colorado to Florida or something.

But I have chores to do anyway so it can't hurt

Does nitro even check anymore? Thought they added plasticisers these days.

I've heard of relicing people going from chest freezer to airing cupboard and back over and over still getting nothing.

Is it open yet? Should be plugged in with the amp turned up to 11 by now!

It's open. A few quick phone photos while the valves are warming up...

Beautiful. I'd have to put a poker chip on it though smile

Thanks chaps. I'm contemplating a poker chip (I notice they've reintroduced it on the 2018 traditional - this is a 2017), might have to have a little google. The pickguard can stay off though.

It sounds glorious (straight into a Marshall DSL). I've been playing with exploring the various tones, its a good bit heavier than any guitar I've ever played and seems to sustain for days. I may have gone a bit mad, my ears are ringing so doubtless the neighbours are in a mood.

Do they typically ship the pickguards not attached to Les Pauls?

I thought they were usually attached and most people take them off

I think it depends on the model. I know standards and traditionals don't, mine was in the case.

The HP models have a different design where the pickguard clips into the pickup rings

There have been a few interesting threads and videos on Gibson recently. It looks like they have hit a rough patch as of late and could be heading for the stter along with their prehistoric guitar range. They've a long history of making an arse of brands that they have bought but they seem to be pissing off even the Kool Aid drinkers at the moment.

Do you have a specific point to make or is this a general rant?

THere's no doubt that Gibson have somewhat been in the doldrums in the last few years. Much discussed on the mylespaul forum.

I have heard much the same. A company trading on the name, nothing more. Quality very poor, nothing new or interesting... Much like the American film industry!

I don't know about that, I've bought two 2017 Gibsons (including the one above) in the last six months. Both are excellent guitars although I will say that the setup needed a tweak on the Traditional. Maybe a little irritating on an expensive guitar but certainly no more than that.

Whether or not Gibson is on the way out as described I have no idea. On the plus side mine will be worth more.

Which brands do you mean that Gibson has taken over and what about them? Genuine question as I've not taken much interest in their corporate affairs.

Can't really fault my 2016 SG other than the neck diving (They all do that, Sir...and they doi) and the 1950's SG in the range that couldn't have existed but we forgive the marketing department their sins. It's a perfectly well made guitar & plays & sounds exactly like an SG should.

Are new LP's rubbish then?

I did the factory tour in Memphis where they make those, in August. Amazed how much hand crafting there is.
