Thanks. smile

At the moment the selector gives:
Rear: Tone bypassed volume only (sounds a bit brighter and slightly more output for solos)
Middle: Volume and tone in circuit.
Forward: A fixed capacitor selected (volume still in circuit) gives a 'cocked wah' sound (known as the 'Eldred mod').

I can also pull up on the tone knob to use a 6K tap off the pickup which gives a brighter, lower output sound.

Eventually I will fit the mid boost PCB and have a different set up with the switch (so that I can bypass the PCB mid gig incase of battery failure).

I also fitted locking tuners to both my Epiphone and Gibson Les Pauls today. Since I bought my SG I found that string changing is so much quicker with locking tuners and this mod is totally reversible should I need to.

Thanks Walter. The neck won't snap under it's own weight, but believe me I was very careful positioning it for that picture. smile I don't think they are any more vulnerable than LPs, but I kept it very close last night as I played the first half of our set on my Tele, then swapped to the SG for end: A rare chance to crank my Marshall Mini Jubilee through it's matching 2x12 cab and it sounded glorious. I used a wireless cable so was able to wander out to the crowd and check the sound out.

Only problem is that our gigs are few and far between, so it all feels a bit flat afterwards. frown I have an end of term rock college gig soon though, but we only get to play 2 songs.
I felt slightly worried for you when I saw it!, I'm sure it's a joy to play too, although don't blame you for playing the Tele most of the time, Teles and Strats seem to be tough as old boots in that regard, I'd love to get an SG myself some day (the Explorer looks cool too although never so much as seen one yet alone played one) but I've set my sights on a Tele Plus V1 for my next guitar so the Sg will have to wait a while!.
Best of luck with your upcoming gig, hope it goes well.

Gratuitous collection and main amp / pedalboards shot. I have another 6 guitars (I think) dotted around.

Nothing gratuitous about that.

It defines what a guitarist is...

I took out the PCB and pickups from my SG today and re-wired it with metal braided wire, full sized pots and put some DiMarzio pickups in it (since I already had the neck one and liked it in another guitar I had, so just added the matching bridge version).

Kitchen workshop job:

Wired up:

Gave it a set up and polish, then took a few more photos:

I really like the way the controls work now; much smoother and more progressive, rather than almost on/off. The DiMarzios sound similar to the standard ones, just a little clearer, but this allowed me to take all the original PCB wiring out intact to keep incase I ever want to return it to standard.

This turned up today,

Although when it arrived it didn’t have any pickups, no machine heads, and the rest of the hardware and wiring were in the case.
I just happened to have a set of 490r/498t Gibson humbuckers, a roller bridge, and a set of locking Grovers in my bits drawer.

I’ve swapped the controls around while I had the soldering iron out, the top knob is now the neck pup, next one down the bridge, and the tone is now next to the jack. Sounds great and feels great. First guitar with a Vibrola on it, it does even less than the Bigsbys I am used to using, there will be no dive bombed harmonics here.

Can't believe this thread had slipped off the first page. smile

My wife went out Christmas shopping so I took over the living room and got all my guitars out and had a play of each one after I took a few 'family photos'. I've been busy doing vairous upgrades on most of them over the last few months. I just need to get the Epiphone LP re-fretted in the New Year (I've had it 24 years and they are a bit worn), I've got a new Tusq nut to be fitted at the same time. I also got one for the SG as the original was cut slightly too deep on the B string, so I've done a short term fix with superglue and bicarb. Non of this will make any difference to the photo though, so here goes...

Spot the Tele knobs I fitted to the drinks cabinet behind :

Thanks...just a lowly Epiphone, but it was my 30th birthday present (so nearly a quarter century old now!) and gradually replaced parts as they wore out (bridge, wiring/pots, Bareknuckle pickups, locking tuners, 1960s style knobs, etc and next the re-fret). It plays superbly, just weighs a ton, so has a wide strap. smile

Really looking forward to receiving my Hudson broadcast ap1 (Ariel Posen). It’s a really expressive slightly fuzzy overdrive, to replicate one of my all time favourite tones.

Help please. My 13 year old grand daughter would like a guitar for Christmas. I'd give her one of mine but she would prefer an acoustic. We'll probably be going to Gear4Music York to try a couple out but I'd like any advice the PH massive can come up with before we go. Budget is £200. Oh, and she's left handed.

Edited by RATATTAK on Sunday 27th October 16:46
My 6 year old is left handed, when we went to buy her a guitar a few months back the guy in the shop was left handed and said he learned to play right handed, recommended she did the same (plenty of internet people agree). She also seemed more comfortable holding it the correct way smile Makes sense really, when you start it's not comfortable holding it either way so may aswell do it properly and make things easy for yourself later.
Thanks for that, it does make sense. After all it didn't hurt Mr Knopfler smile.
Bought a right handed in the end - she chose an Epiphone AJ-220S, so I'm happy about that ... many thanks all for the assistance

I’ve lurked this thread for some time now gazing wistfully at the pictures. I’ve been looking at double cut guitars of various types (Epi dot, Harley Benton clones etc) for a while now and none of them quite fit the bill. I don’t have Gibson 335 money. This came up locally at a great price. I’d never even heard of them.

It’s an Ibanez AR300. No idea what the burst colour is called, but it’s gorgeous to my eyes. It’s a 2005 (Korean) in basically perfect condition. There’s a bit of fret wear and a tiny bit of low E buzz since I restrung it, but nothing a fret dress and setup wouldn’t sort out.

I’ve bought it with a bit of money my dad gave me before he died a while back so I think this one will be staying with me.

Thanks. I’m very happy with it so far.

Lovely collection. Does the SG suffer from neck dive? Mine only drops to parallel with the floor (ish) but it’s enough that I won’t play it standing up until I’ve sorted it. I think I might move the bottom strap button.

That's a very nice fleet indeed!

I'd love to try a Red Special. I remember back in the day that Guild had received the license to make RS recreations. Is that still the case, or are they produced by another manufacturer these days?
