Nice...I bought a used Tiny Terror head from them a few years ago; great service and exactly as described (good saving over new at the time).

Is that a 'Vintage' brand as I seem to remember seeing one on their used section recently?

Nope, it's a brand new Gibson Custom Shop '56 Reissue. Just had a little tiny ding in the top, hence a decent deal negotiated against list price (bought via Reverb).

Oh dear....that's a bit like someone mistaking a Bentley for a Yugo. boxedin Though I've heard good things about Vintage guitars to be fair.

I was looking at used R6 (I think that's the spec) before Christmas as an upgrade to my 60s Tribute Gold Top, but I've grown attached to it and use it for open mic nights as I love the sounds I can get out of it...P90s into a cranked Champ without blowing off the audience's ears in the smaller pubs I've been playing at lately.

Happy new Gold Top day. smile

That R6 is beautiful.

My dream guitar is a gold top R7.

Nah, easy enough mistake to make. Pic has a filter, can't see the headstock etc. And I'm not fussed about bragging rights anyway smile

I adore the R7 to look at but don't think I'll ever be able to justify one. If I'm lucky enough to get a full-bodied double humbucker Les Paul, call me a cliche, but it'll be an R9 (I already have a Chambered R8). I justify buying more guitars as long they offer something I don't already have... sadly none seem to improve my talents but I'm not pretending otherwise!

Next on the list will probably be a PRS Hollowbody II, which is the only PRS I like. I have been gassing hard for one for years. Very nearly nabbed one of the ones that Andertons / GuitarGuitar / GAK currently have, but even at the prices I was offered, I couldn't justify the numbers right now. I put down four figures on the R6 and will be paying the balance on 0% interest. The same arrangement on the PRS would have been almost double the monthly payment, and I didn't particularly love the specific examples available. Andertons one is truly excellent, and in perfect condition, but has an uneven flame top which I didn't like, and part of the reason you buy such a guitar is for the looks. GuitarGuitar's is damaged (chipped headstock), and didn't play as nicely, so even though I preferred the look I couldn't be sold. On guitars this valuable, the commitment isn't taken lightly. One day will be the right day.

High end gear stuff

See for me the 57 beats the 59 as I have always liked the slightly thicker and rounder neck, as far as quality goes your splitting hairs with the R6/7/8/9 it's all down to preference and nerdy stuff.

HBii are also lovely, possibly the best guitar I've ever played was a HBii on McCarty burst that I sold on for a friend.

Though your comments about an uneven flame, isn't that how most book matched tops look? I know the one I sold was 'uneven' but o totally agree, spending that much money, the guitar needs to be the one that just screams buy me.

The top on my Cu22 was crap though lol

I know that Gibson Custom Shop sort the blank bodies into R7/R8/R9 according to some kind of selection criteria (maybe weight?) before the tops are fitted. I can't say that I really know why, but if they sort them at that stage it suggests something about the quality or specification and there's no doubting R9 is considered 'top of the range' and commands the highest price tag. I also like the fat necks.... and my R6 and CR8 have me covered!

The Andertons PRS is this one -

https://www.andertons.co.uk/prs-hollowbody-ii-ten-...

Plays great, sounds great, priced alarmingly well (currently £4.3k down from £6k), but I don't own it right now because I'm not dropping over four grand on a guitar I don't love the looks of when I know part of its ticket price is down to artistry and appearance (unlike R6's which all look about the same). I bet that's why it hasn't sold for a while.

Apologies for taking the thread off topic!

Non of those PRS guitars appeal to me at all, sorry.

The control placement seems very random, the cutaway showing the mahogany under the cap, even though it’s a hollow body, and that sunburst reminds me of a crappy Teisco from Woolworths.

You cannot beat the shape and looks of a Les Paul.

Sssssh don't look into this new fangled brand called Fender lol

Variety is the spice of life and I'll be honest, I adore LPs but they can't do everything.

The PRS control layout on the HB is to allow for a massive variety of shifting, utilising piezo bridge, blending stero outputs etc it's more than your usual time/volume setup.

I'd hate to think what you'd make of some of the more modern stuff coming through these days! The frets aren't even straight ffs :haha:

When I used to sell them, the Gibson rep said they are all of the same quality but the R9 is in much higher demand so has a high retail price, typical supply and demand.

I see why you didn't go for the PRS, that's a lovely top bit don't think it works too well on that shape, if o was going to get one is probably go gold top (yeah, it does exist and it's heavenly) or a nice blue. Bit is also want it with Spruce not mahogany so I think that's a different model possibly?

Due to age related stiffness in my hands I'm sadly disposing of my Fender Custom Shop collection.
An Antigua Clapton Strat (unused)
A 1995 John Cruz 1960 Strat (mint).
A 1993 very early Custom Shop 51 P. Bass (mint).
And last a string through body active Jazz bass (mark on back).

Not quite, so as not to upset the rules I didn't put prices but they are all on Gumtree along with a very nice virtually unused Mesa Boogie 5-50 combo. And an Ashdown 30 watt all valve Bass head and Aguilar SL12 cabinet.

Thanks, I've got them on Reverb and of course e-bay. The problem with e-bay apart from the ridiculous fees and PayPal rip off is that you can't get my address to try them out and at the sort of money you need to try and inspect.
You'd be amazed at the number of fake Custom Shop guitars on e-bay.
You used to be able to type in the certificate number on the Fender web-site and get a full read-out of the model/colour etc at least that's what I have with mine but I can't find it of late. Anyway for entertainment I put a few of the numbers in for the guitars on e-bay and instead of coming back with the details it stated no model found.

Reverb has been very good as I've got a chap who wants the 51 P. Bass but he is over in the States and I'm not keen to deal with all the hassle. The P. Bass in the States is £1.6K more than mine and according to his e-mails mine is in just as good condition.

I've had the usual wide boys making silly offers but that is to be expected. Never tried Fretboard so may give it a go.

I was talking to someone the other day (on a quite unrelated matter) who happened to mention that a friend of his has an ex-Mark Knopfler Strat that is worth a small fortune, but if he tries to list it for sale, then everyone will know he's skint and offer him about a quarter of its real value..

I guess if it can be genuinely authenticated then there shouldn't be a problem, My 40th Anniversary Playboy Strat sold within 4 hours, the guy came straight down from London checked it out, did a money transfer on the spot for what I was asking for it no attempt to bid me down. Not sure if he thought I was skint but that didn't come into the equation as far as I could see.
