I finally got round to swapping out the loom and original pickups from my Player series Fender Jaguar: I'd bought it with the intention of making it into a single pickup 'Jagsquire' but found I liked the neck pickup and wasn't so keen on the bridge (humbucker with a tap function). I picked up a pair of used '65 Pure Vintage pickups before Christmas (as used in the American Original models) and I got a spare knob panel to put some new pots and tone cap on, so I could remove the whole original loom and pickups should I ever decide to sell it and put it back to standard.

I had to sellotape the selector switch in so I could test it out, but those pickups sound fantastic: The neck is more like the sort of sound I've been trying to get out of my Strat (quite reminiscent of Hendrix's clean tone), the bridge is bright and twangy as you'd expect for a Jaguar. The middle position is almost like an 'out of phase' Strat tone.

I don't much care for all the extra switches and knobs on a Jaguar. Also the original pickup switch kept getting in my way (below the neck pickup on the Player series), so I used a spare Gibson SG switch and moved it to above the neck pickup, which I'm more used to with my Les Pauls. I'm waiting on a quote for a custom pickguard which is essentially a standard SS one but without the lower hexagonal hole for the switch plate. I found a chrome top plate with a single hole for the SG switch to mount in. Should be a slightly cleaner look compared to a regular Jaguar.

State of play so far (with a Stay trem bridge and Tele knobs):

I'm also tempted to spray it in Candy Apple Red, but this would be easier if I just bought a spare bare body to save stripping the original poly one. That would make it another Trigger's new broom since I'd only have the neck and bridge from the original guitar. boxedin

I do like the look of this though, especially if it had a little lacquer checking so it didn't look too pristine:

just picked this little concert bodied filly up....

always wanted a martin..been looking at both martin and taylor but it seems the richer tone and deeper bass end are more up my street so a martin was the obvious way to go...

WOW !!!

That is bloody rare mate.

A proper (ie acoustic) guitar on this thread, as 99.9999 % are electric guitar owners stroking each others willys.
Liking that, nice one !

LOL

Fair play mate, I suspected you had a slight case of GAS (guitar aquisition syndrome).

I expected a few more witty quips and people checking my profile to see how they could attack me for my sarcasm, but the two lame ones were a disappointment.
Still loving my Lowden, but keep noticing a few others I'd like to own.

Regarding GAS* I must have taken the musician's equivalent of 'wind-eze' as I'm having a big think apart what gear I need and what I should sell once lock down is over. I've come to the conclusion that I should sell one Tele, one Gretsch and maybe a Gibson LP Junior too. I compared various guitars side by side and found some cover similar ground and others are effectively duplicates.

It's nice to have a bit of variety of neck profiles and radius, so I chose to keep my Esquire with a fat neck and add a neck pickup rather than keep the Tele with it's medium neck (that is very similar to the Strat I definitely won't be selling). I love the look of the Gretsch, but don't like playing it, even changed pickups and still don't like the sound. The Junior has a lovely fat neck, quite different from my 60s Tribute Gold Top Les Paul, but playing them side by side the bridge pickup on the Gold Top sounds virtually identical to the Junior: I guess I drunk the 'cool aid' that a single pickup sounds different. On the plus side, the price went up 30% since I bought it last Feb, so I might get most of my money back if I'm lucky.

I'll be left with: Strat, Tele, Les Paul w/P90s, SG w/humbuckers, Jaguar and an electro acoustic Washburn.

I've found it quite cathartic, though I can't guarantee that I won't have changed my mind by the end of lock down. smile

* Gear acquisition syndrome as it gets used a lot on other forums apart from guitars. wink

Nice......and a lefty too!

I have had some severe attacks of GAS over the years and spend a lot of time trawling ebay for something else to buy that I don't need and will never do justice to.

Luckily as a lefty there are not nearly as many to chose from so this has saved me a fortune.

If I was right handed I'd almost certainly be divorced!

Also, being an extremely average player means I only tend to buy relative cheap stuff....so these is at least one benefit from being crap!

Just a heads up if your sending a guitar to avoid Parcelforce. Packed in a case, double boxed and covered head to toe in fragile tape and this is how it turned up with the neck snapped. Doubtful I'll get anything back from the they charge for extra protection but seemingly don't cover musical instruments.

haha!!.. oh mate... got to agree...when i bought the les paul back in 96 there were literally only 2 to choose from in about 6 different guitar shops around my area....right handed there were about 25....ll luckily my black one was the model i was after.... my problem is i can't let go. i've only sold a couple of guitars over the years whereas i've got a right handed usa strat restrung left handed that i never touch... i bet it's worth a fortune being a '74 large headstock variant but i still can't muster the courage to let it go after 27 years of ownership...

i've only recently started messing with the bass as our bass player moved abroad so i dived straight in with a decent sounding but cheap marcus miller 5 string ... took me a while to figure out how best to set up the tuning (on 6 string guitars i drop E to D then drop everything another half step to a low C# ) ... i've got it now as i tune the 4 high strings the same as the guitar ( the "drop D" shape but down to C#) with the low end being B flat...

tuning that way keeps me sane because i can track the root note of guitar chords on the 4th string and work out from there...

here's the problem.... i watched and was mesmerised by a bass playthrough by a fella called nolly getgood on his dingwall bass... i'd never heard of the brand and by all accounts sheldon dingwall is now flying and a lot of it has to do with nolly... anyway, you start delving and it's going to be hard to resist dropping a few grand on one....well, easier to resist knowing i will be de-bked if one of those turns up at homelaugh

check out this bass sound... incredible...

Ouch indeed. I ordered a Vintage Paradise before Christmas that arrived with a crack in the neck lacquer where it meets the body which suggested it had taken a big knock in transit. The shop were great and sent another immediately to replace it but it obviously happens a lot.

Any chance of diverting into "this could be my guitar" thread:
Looking for a fairly budget 7 string, I have quite a few guitars about not looking to lash out tons of money. Was wondering whether I could get away with a subzero gen pro fanned ( extra money on new pickups if needed) or 2nd hand Ibanez RGMS7 Iron label or something else...
Something I haven't heard of is Lindo LDC7X and looks interesting, although I was playing with novelty of fanned frets....

In for comments, I'm after similar, a fanned fret 7. The harley benton models have intruiged me (again, with room for new pickups)

I understand those new HB amaroks are exceptional value for money, I think there’s a 7 string multi scale version.

I’ve considered dumping my £1k Schecter Banshee Elite and grabbing the equivalent 6 string variant for like £300
