I have a THR and I’ve had a few decent valve amps and the mustang 3 as well. Can’t go wrong with a THR for the size, convenience and it’s easy on the eye so you can leave it on a shelf and it doesn’t look like a suitcase in your living room. My gretsch sounds great through it, totally different to my strat. Worth a look.
I wouldn’t part with mine, great amp.

Ok, while loving the Gretsch I bought recently and while it sounds good through my iRig and headphones it sounds rubbish through my amp.

I have a Fender Mustang 1 v2

My Les Paul sounds ok, the 335 sounds rubbish while my affinity telecaster and mexican strat sound good.

Im thinking that the Amp needs changing as the Gibsons and the Gretsch are too hot for it, but need something small.

Would the Yamaha THR10ii be suitable? It seems to get good reviews but then so did the Mustang (although I am aware it is a cheap amp).

Obvious answer and something i will probably do is to take the 335 which is the worst for the fender to a shop and plug it in but just wondered about opinions on here.

FWIW I find that certain amps favour certain guitars: My Fenders sound great through my Fender Deluxe and Champ amps, but my Gibsons and Gretsch sound better through my Marshalls. However, I can dial the Marshalls in to work well with the Fender guitars too, but they do need quite different settings. If I change back I have to twiddle some knobs to get the right sound with the Gibsons.

I think it's because (generally speaking) the Gibsons are much warmer sounding and the Fenders are much brighter/twangier sounding. Gretsch is an odd one for me, because I bought mine thinking it would be bright and twangy, but I found mine was quite dull sounding, so I changed pickups twice before I realised I just can't get along with the bulk of it (as much as I love the looks of a Gretsch).

It's not long before we can start going into shops and trying amps, etc out, so your last comment is the one I'd say to follow. What I like might not be what suits you anyway: I'm not a fan of modeling amps, though I do have an old Line 6 that I used to work out what amp types I should look to buy the 'proper' versions of. It went faulty and can't be repaired, which is always my issue with tech, so I've since stuck with valve amps, some of them wired point to point so at least I can repair then one day if need be.

There might be a bit of a flood of used gear coming up once the shops open up too: I've been buying used pedals and looking on sites regularly and noticed how used stock has really dropped over the last few months. Maybe once people can get in shops then they'll be PXing gear again, so you might get lucky with something used. At least then if you buy something and find it doesn't suit after the initial honeymoon period you can sell it on at little loss.

Picked this up yesterday, now restrung and set up nice. Kawai KS11. Fabulous.

Great to see one of these.

I have a KS12 that I bought when I was still at school and nearly 40 years later I still have it and it was my go to electric until I go the "50th birthday present to myself" Les Paul. They are great guitars and in terms of sound, build quality and ease of playing every bit the competitor to modern high end instruments.

It is a great guitar, but the combination of the BadAss bridge and the slotted headstock did lead to a little swearing as I restrung it. Every bit as good to play as my “nice” Les Paul.

Yes I hate slotted headstocks with a passion! I'd rather restring ten guitars than one violin or mandolin.

Try a Rickenbacker 12 string before they made the slot all the way through!

Rickenbacker guitars are for weirdos though.

I was just about to put my Jem 20th up for sale and looked at the prices. What would you do - sell for a clear profit or keep in the case and watch the slow climb of prices?

I was about to mention the Rick 12, I used to have one with the half-way-through slot. Nightmare!

However my real pet hate is the reverse headstock, I find trying to tune one of those a total PITA. I spend half the time turning the wrong peg, and the other half on the right peg but in the wrong direction.

I did have a few issues to start with but once I got the hang of it the slotted headstock wasn't a problem and having watched my boss knock the guitar over at a works event right before I was due to perform I would certainly recommend it for strength over a Les Paul...

Try Blackstar HT1R, combo. 2nd hand ~ £120-180. Great sounds at living room levels. Sits in same room as JMP50+4x12, attenuated - rarely gets switched on. Had for 10 years, 2 of my friends bought and love too.

Tele, Jag, Les Paul, stratty Charvel all sound great - Nile Rogers to AC/DC to anything - no od or distortion required - use vol. on guitar to clean up.

Wanting to pick some brains from you lot on here, you'll all be much more experienced than I with buying/selling guitars!

Got an electric up for sale at the moment on facebook. Nothing crazy, about a £350-400 quid guitar. I bought it from a store in glasgow (pre owned) in Nov 2019 for £399. Not really had any good bites on facebook and I'm not in a rush to post it. I emailed the store I bought it from and have been offered £190 to sell or £220 to trade in. Not overly enthusiastic about those prices but from what I've heard from folk, it's probably about right for a stores offer on a lower end guitar, which makes sense for their markup etc.

Now, I'm going to email a few places and see what prices ocme back but would circa 50% of a £350-£400 sound about right? I'm crap at selling stuff and have never sold a guitar!

You have to expect a shop will want to turn a profit and it’s hardly worth their time for less than £100-200.

What’s the guitar?

Exactly, figure wise it seems okay, just as a percentage it sounds a bit crap!

It's just a Shecter Synyster Standard. Bought on a whim but don't get on with it!

I'll see what other offers come through but considering the fun I've had dealing with the general public, I may take them up on their offer just to make space.

Don't forget that if a shop buys it from you, they will have to pay VAT when they sell it, on the entire amount, not just their profit. So they have to make 20% just to break even!

(This is why they can offer more as a trade-in, as they can also factor in the profit they make on what they sell you.)

Terrible photo I'm afraid. I made this about 4 years ago.

Finally got my new build finished, body and neck made to my spec by a friendly luthier;

https://imgur.com/gallery/xyBWIc4

Spec is

  • koa top over roasted ash, all simply tru oiled to a satin - no stain at all
  • Roasted birds eye maple neck with 12" radius ebony board and jumbo frets
  • ASL eruption bridge, Dimarzio Injector in the middle and Dimarzio Heavy Blues 2 in the neck
  • Suhr spec treble bleed circuit
  • NFT Floyd Rose
  • Hipshot open gear locking tuners
Plays beautifully, can do exactly what I was aiming for with an EVH tone on the bridge, flick to position 4-5 and roll back the volume a touch for SRV tones without touching the amp
