Now I know this is going to stir some strong feelings but hey what the hell...
I went watching the Thunder/Whitesnake/Def Leopard gig in Liverpool the other week and recently went along to Foo's and Maiden gigs and its got me thinking.....who has the best voice in rock? Not the best song or band in general but actual singing qualities??
Some have strong distinctive, iconic voices even such as Bruce Dickinson or even Lemmy but for me Danny Bowes has the best voice...but what do you think?

I love Def Leppard, but as good as Joe Elliot is , it was Steve Clark who defined their sound IMO. Hysteria is the high point of their music. Thunder made some good stuff but never really made it to the top. Again IMO.

Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) is very good IMO, very distictive and can growl/scream with the best of 'em!

Depends what you're into really, vocalists like Mikael Aferfeldt from Opeth, Tommy Rogers from Between The Buried & Me or Ihsahn from Emperor really impresses me because they can go from the more extreme growls and screams into smooth as silk clean vocals, Ihsahn has an extremely good range in clean vocals as well. In terms of straight ahead rock someone like Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes has a really good strong bluesy voice as does Kelly Jones from The Stereophonics.

I have to agree with Matt above with Dio.

I'd also add Hendrix, Mercury, Dylan (ok - so not rock), Jagger ...... I'm sure there's more

Assuming we're listing who we think are the best rock singers as opposed to who are our favorites...

Robin Zander from Cheap Trick has been consistantly good on recordings as well as live for their whole career.
Dio already mentioned, but a serious voice.
Sammy Hagar, again, superb vocal abiity and consistantly good live or recorded.

Favorites and the best are often 2 different things. I love Hendrix though and through, but to list him as one of the best voices in rock is just wrong!
