no idea if it's been mentioned yet but Clannad's Harry's Game theme was lovely IMO

What album is it on? I know it's on the "I" 4 track ep, but is it on a full album?

Apologies, my bad. I thought it was on their self titled album but just checked and it's not! I have it on a couple of my playlists. The self titled album is great though.
I need to give that a whirl. I think they released an album this year, Cry.

I need to give it more listens. It's good but more of the same so I haven't stuck with it.

I could name about 5 by Sigur Ros

Sadly as a result of them, my mission to find the perfect sound is done, and my interest in music has waned a bit ever since!!

Hoppipola seems to be the go to track for just about every natural world documentary going. David Attenborough programmes must have made them super rich.

Has anyone mentioned Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. I'm not a huge fan of him but this is a haunting track.

If I may chip in to this thread for the first time, Here’s Chi Mai by Ennio Morricone. Though I suppose it’s personal as it makes me feel deeply sad with memories of my parents who died 6 years ago.

I see your Chi Mai but raise you The Mission https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oag1Dfa1e_E

Had a real effect on me as a teenager, still brings me out in goosebumps (and now tears as well, of which, more below).

PHers: thank you for this thread. I'm in the crappy position of being forced to confront my own mortality, as the medics told me on Friday they reckon I have less than 12 months to go.

It's been a while coming, it's not entirely unexpected, but suddenly I need to think about what music I want played at my funeral, but it's music I won't hear. But the fabulously broad church that is PH has given me some ideas. Personally I am thinking Caliban's Dream from the London 2012 Album, as that was one of the happiest periods of my life when I felt on top of the world, and Gladiator Now We Are Free - what do you guys think?

I am, genuinely, interested - there is no manual for this.

Wow, that's tough. I suppose a lot of it comes down to that age old question, who is a funeral for, the person who's died or help those left behind. So if you think the latter, maybe your partners favourite song, or your children.

You could go down the humour route to give everyone a laugh,Going Underground by the Jam, if it's a burial, etc.

Dunno what I'd going for if it was me. Probably Life on Mars by Bowie on the way in. And Blue is the Colour by Chelsea FC on the way out. At least I'd know all family and most of my friends would know the words to Blue is the Colour and be signing along full pelt!

Blimey, that's a genuine biggy - I'm sorry to hear it and wish you well.

Regarding the specifics of the music, do you have a favourite band? Something that everyone associates you with? A band you follow, or a song you always dance to? If yes, get them to play that. Doesn't matter if it's cheesy ste, everyone will smile.

A pal of mine was a massive Abba fan and when he died young - and the funeral had Hollywood A listers with speaking parts - it was the music that united everybody.

But mix it with something traditional and decorous - it is an event for your extended family and aged aunts as well as close family and friends. Something like The Lark Ascending has obvious appeal, but pastoral music by Vaughan Williams seems either just perfect, or a long way from it, depending on what type of bloke you are.

I think my only observation would be that it should reflect you; your tastes, your style. As you say, there is no rule book, but it's your funeral and you'll only get one so make it memorable.

One final point from a personal perspective is that I've sadly attended a number of funerals of men who were 'too young' and they are intrinsically sad, so a combination of traditional music for dignified passage embellished with a personal flourish has always seemed to work better and be more satisfying than a templated option of whatever flavour.

Grim stuff, but at least you get to choose the music!

All I can offer is my experience of the last funeral I attended 2 years ago; my father's.

As a well known actor in amateur operatics for 40-odd years in South Wales, the tunes chosen at his cremation were those that the congregation (many of which were fellow members of the operatic society) could sing with conviction. I still remember his best mate, Lyn, belting out "Calon Lan" at the top of his prodigious voice.

And I suppose that's what I'm getting to; my Dad would have wanted a send-off with voices. That's what he got.

Me?

Thinking about it, I can't sing, but I'm musical. I play the guitar and understand basic music theory.

As such, I'd probably go for something instrumental without words for my send-off. Maybe Chopin's Nocturne No.1 Opus 9, or Ralph Vaughan-Williams' "Thomas Tallis Fantasia".

Whatever.

I wish you all the very best, and that time is kind to you.

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit

Eerie, haunting, scary, and sung by one of the world’s beautiful voices.

You read a lot of “/endthread” posts but really this is the one. Got to be.

She had been singing this for 20 years here, and she still felt it as much, probably more every time.
