Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit

Eerie, haunting, scary, and sung by one of the world’s beautiful voices.

You read a lot of “/endthread” posts but really this is the one. Got to be.

She had been singing this for 20 years here, and she still felt it as much, probably more every time.
Haunting yes also great but not beautiful and made me feel sad

I feel the beauty of strength and courage in the song.
Billie was a bit of a mess for many years but found redemption every time she sang I believe.

How about “Beautifully haunting” them for Strange Fruit.
That probably fits better

Not many will know Kaz Hawkins but one of the best female voices I have ever heard.

More haunting is the fact the song is a true story about being a cocaine addict, suffering domestic abuse and being beaten and left for dead!

Whilst on the subject that is Billie Holliday.... her version of this song gives me the creeps. It’s beautifully sung and you can feel ever drop of every drug she ever took oozing out of it. It’s raw

I’m a Fool to want you.

David Sylvian - When Poets Dreamed of Angels

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gHjjisKxzs

She rises early from bed
Runs to the mirror
The bruises inflicted in moments of fury
He kneels beside her once more
Whispers a promise
"Next time I'll break every bone in your body"
......

Every time you think of one, another one comes along that you forgot!

But 3 of my all-time favourites are Bring me to Life by Evanescence, Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor and Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd.

Although by tomorrow I'm sure there will be others!

Two from me:-

Cold Water by Damien Rice from the wonderful album 'O'. Haunting and Beautiful describe this masterpiece perfectly:-

I also love the 'Exit Music' track off OK Computer by Radiohead, another masterpiece.

Good call about Damien Rice, he's done some crackers.

Can't link right now but Accidental Babies is a lovely song.

Also a Leonard Cohen-esque song called something like she goes back to her man
Really powerful.

Have we had 'Forever Autumn' from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds yet?

Watching the BBC War of the Worlds series reminded me of this song and thought it could fit the thread.

What about Sissel's version of Graham Gouldman's fabulous 'Ready to go home'? Written by Gouldman following the death of his father. Brings a tear to my eye every time.

In reply to Roofless ...

Allison Moorer does a very good rendition.
Loudon Wainwright has a good go at it, too.
I'm partial to a bit of Van, but can't listen to his version, although he did much better when he sang it with the Chieftains.

I can take or leave Van Morrison. The Chieftans I definitely am a fan of, but I don't like their joint version.

This exchange tempted me last night to look at a few versions on YouTube. There is something about the song that makes you think it should be all distant pipes and swirling echoes, but when you hear one of those arrangements you realise it all becomes very sterile.

My choice, the Dubliners (can't remember the name of the vocalist offhand) just moves me because it is such a genuine and unashamed display of emotion by a very real grown up man.

I don’t suppose anybody has made a Spotify playlist for all these tracks?
