This one was dripping oil from the rear of the engine. Another morning wasted by a car dealer.
As I say, Hemi might be the answer. How many miles a year do you plan to do?For similar reasons, I run a 4.6 V8 Range Rover rather than the 2.5 diesel. Because at 4000'ish miles a year, the actual running costs for fuel are pretty insignificant.
This one was a bit shabby in general, none of the rams (rear boot/bonnet) worked, it had the most surface rust underneath that I'd seen, a poorly painted replacement wing mirror, stained headlining, non-functioning rear TPMS, had a service request on the dashboard and was just generally a bit down at heel, which was surprising given it was relatively low mileage. However it didn't have any big leaks.

I'm a Land Rover man though and though I have had most models over the last 30 years in the last few years my main cars have been a 51 plate TD5 Discovery I only sold this because of rust to the chassis and replaced it with a L322 Range Rover I had to sell this because at 87,000 miles it was falling to bits and this was a 2 owner full history car ,so what to have next ? By chance my son was playing rugby just behind a Alfa main dealer and in the front window was their new sports model the 4C which is beautiful ,walking in and talking to the sales man he asked what my car was ,I told him a 04 Range Rover HSE , you will be wanting to test drive in our GC,so after the match off we go ,having just got out of the L322 this was not as nice bit on the small size bit to much plastic ,leather on the seat was thinner or not just as good ,but it drove nice and was comfortable .I went home that night and had a look on the web and was surprised to find farmers up north all using them and the caravan club praising the GC again for it towing and low fuel cost and all talk of reliability ,the next day I started looking for one found a 62 plate limited model with 48,000 and full history. Nearly three years later and with 98,000 now showing on the clock ,apart from tyres and servicing I have had to replace two blubs .The trim is still mint and paint no marks ,engine pulls the same as the day I got her the gear box don't even think about it, it just works as it should .Would I have another a big yes and looking to replace with a newer model.P.S I have a 90 or life would get boring.Below in Scotland touring the 500 route.

Deposit down on a Disco 2, what have I let myself in for?!
You'll be fine! Hopefully, no more than the usual niggles that afflict any vehicle 10+ years old.Deposit down on a Disco 2, what have I let myself in for?!
In the past 12 months on mine (an older T reg one that has spent just as much time off the road as on it). Bear in mind it gets used/abused daily and is 18 years old - plus it's an early D2 and not half as well put together as a later or facelift one.
- Front propshaft - rebuilt for £50 in parts and an afternoon of cursing stupid needle roller bearings. Preventative maintenance.
- Viscous Fan packed up. £50 for a new one and 20 mins to fit.
- ARB Drop-links £10 each side. 30 mins.
- Left headlight gave up - cured by unplugging + furious wiggling + spraying every electrical connector on the headlight with WD40/contact cleaner.
- Occasional oil leak from the sump - mislaid the new sump washer last time it was serviced so the old one went back on.... (my fault).
My experience of Discos is that they tend to drip-feed you odd and sometimes bewildering niggles rather than catastrophically failing in a major wallet-busting kind of way. Most of the 'badduns' have long since died or been fixed by now. Service it, attend to the odd foible now and then - enjoy trucking around the rest of the time in your LR....
